I just returned from a trip and figured I'd post my mileage here for those who are interested.
Where? Virginia Beach, VA. to D.C. and back
Total Miles? 490 miles
Avg MPG? 53.3 mpg
AC? Off
Econ? On
Cruise Control? No. I drive an LX.
This is all according to my MID. The weather was cool enough (60-65F degrees) to keep the A/C off. I am not a hypermiler and tried to drive the car like any other normal driver. In the 65mph zones on I-64 and I-95, I tried my best to keep my speed around 68mph, sometimes dropping to 65mph or going as high as 74mph at times. In the 55mph zones, I stayed around 60-64mph.
This is my first long highway trip and I'm really impressed with getting 53.3mpg. I actually reached 53.3mpg about 3/4 to D.C. and just kept it there. On my way back, it was hovering anywhere between 53.0 and 53.5mpg depending on the hills, but registered 53.3 as I pulled into my driveway.
FYI, the MID showed I drove 325 miles right when the needle reached the 1/2 mark on the fuel guage (and yes, I know the guage is not really accurate). As of this morning, I currently have 515 miles driven on this one tank of fuel with the MID showing I have 46 miles remaining. The Low Fuel light has not turned on yet.
I hope this post can show that it is entirely possible to get great mileage (well above EPA estimates), even without the aggressive hypermiling techniques others use.
