A- Set on Refuel
B- Set on Oil Changes. It's always best practice to keep track of your oil changes, since that is the first time marker for all other maintenance...

I'm "breaking rank" with other responses, for exactly the reasons Ken4Green questioned about getting a better idea of mpg vs speed and elapsed time.

I changed the Honda default settings on trip "A" NOT to auto reset on fill up. I instead reset trip "A": manually to track individual travel trips- be it my daily commute or a vacation trip.

I reset trip "B" manually at fill-up to track mileage between fill ups.

Why use trip "B" to track fill-up mileage, when trip "A" would reset automatically by default (before I changed it), you ask?

By doing it this way, one can easily check average trip speed and elapsed trip time for individual trips via the muli-display, which I find valuable. Average speed and elapsed time are only calculated for trip "A", not independently calculated for trip "B".

For instance, I recently took a 700 mile vacation trip. We stopped a few times for rest breaks during the trip and experienced several traffic delays at certain points during the trip. During the trip I wondered about the impact of the traffic delays on my average speed.

While I could easily calculate how long it took to make the entire trip from point A to point B and thus figure my average mph by doing a little math in my head; it would be a little more complex to think about subtracting out the various rest stop times to determine actual travel trip time and actual trip average speed, stop times factored in.

For another example, after traveling 300 miles at a average cruising speed of 65 mph, if you got stuck in traffic for an hour and only averaged 25 mph, what would be the effect on your trip average speed?

By changing the Honda default settings, the multi display is always available to keep track of both my accumulated travel time (automatically not including the rest stop time when the engine was shut off and not resetting when the engine was again turned on or gas fill up) and my average speed for the entire trip.

During my normal commutes, it's handy to observe both your commute travel time and average speed for the trip and their affect relative to your computed trip mpg.

What a really NEAT - great idea! I really like it.

I use trip A for tank miles/mileage and trip B for trip mileage.

A -- Resets at refuel
B -- Resets when I remember it exists and think I have a purpose for it. Currently, it's waiting for the first oil change...maybe.

I preferred the default setting on my old Skodas to what the Insight's MID offers.

On both the Skoda Fabia and Octavia (Both 2000) that I owned, the trip computer would automatically reset if the car was not driven for 2 hours. This meant that Trip A always automatically tracked the current journey, including any short breaks.

I'd love a way to get a similar auto function for the Insight.

Trip B on the Skodas, if left alone, would track up to 9999 miles and then reset. That was a bit annoying as I assumed it would be lifetime until it rolled over...

The Insight's Trip A auto tank reset is kind of nice, but a bit pointless for anything other than checking the discrepancy when it's so easy to calculate mpg for a tank anyway.

Currently...

A - Reset at fill up.
B - What ever I want to monitor.

I think with B if you look at different trips, weather, speed, style, traffic, etc., you can get a firm grip on what your Insight like and doesn't.

I have set B and acheived 56.7 one way to work.
Then driving around my community, 48.4.

When you caculate TRUE, depends on what you are driving too.
Lots of "city" stop and go, short trips, not up to temp, etc, will chew it up.

Use the ECO Meter to help you acheive a good driving style.
Use the bar graph to tell you when you are in lean burn.
Setting B for some of these things will have you on your way
