I live in Arizona and I was taking I-10 from Phoenix to Tucson the other night heading back from IMAX. I took highway-60 the way there and I had an average trip mpg of 53 traveling at an average of 65 mph. I took I-10 back and I was traveling an average of 75 mph sometimes 80 and my mpgs dumped down to below 40 mpg.

I was using cruise control the entire time and the road conditions were great.

They used to call it "highway hypnois." I deal with it by keeping my eyes moving and my brain active. Use of rest areas for physical activity, is a great help as well.
