I just slip the transmission into S mode if I anticipate the need for instant acceleration like briefly stopping at a stop sign or yield sign. .

I've gotten into the habit of anticipating
what others will be
doing when. I've also developed a feel for how much time goes by after I take my foot off the brake the engine restarts, the start clutch is engaged, and the Blue Bird is ready to fly.
So my practice has become to just hold my foot on the brake while in "D". Then make the anticipation and release the brake at the right time. If I'm too fast / a few more moments standing still is needed. I'll slightly depress the gas while adding a little brake to prevent movement. This keeps the engine running, the start clutch engaged, and the I2 ready to spring like a cat!
