Although, to be sure, I'm not to the point where I plan out a massive detour to avoid the biggest slopes near my home. After a few weeks of owning it, I'm much more Zen about my mileage. I can see big swings when I reset the odometer, but in the long run, I'm not going to move the MPG much with one or two hits here and there. Consistency is the key, and I like that.
Agreed, but I will check out google maps to see the total miles using the expressways vs local roads. I generally have more time and get better mileage on locals so I prefer locals on shorter trip of less than 15 miles, and that's most of my driving. I don't do any commuting. On long expressway trips, and I've only had a few in the past 6 months since I bought my insight, mostly to downtown Chicago from the burbs, I just set the cruise to the speed limit and chill.

Interesting, mikejbb: So you bought an Insight and don't do any commuting? How many miles have you put on the car?
I don't do any commuting by car, either, so I'm curious if your Insight is as idle as mine would be if I were to get one. I've heard that idleness is not good for Insights' hybrid batteries and that it's less of a concern for Priuses' hybrid batteries.
I/my wife drive it every day, just don't go on the Xway very often. We get very good mileage, above 50 avg. That's actual for every fillup. Often the display goes over 62mpg where it stops for a trip. Winter is harder of course, but keep track of your tire pressure, I was lax for awhile and my mpg dropped.

Oh, I see. Nice mileage figures! Yeah, it seems the displays in both Priuses and Insights are overly optimistic about actual mileage.
Speaking of Priuses and Insights, It's interesting to note that according to fuelly, the prius on aveage only gets 3 mpg better per tank. This is is spite of a larger battery, 2 electric motors and all of its other complexities.
The Honda IMA gives you a far better bang for your buck.

I drove my daughters Prius in November and got 57mpg on a 200 mile trip about half was Xway but some went up a Mtn to a ski resort near Seattle. My wife and I were going towards Mt Rainier at the time and actually saw it for 30 seconds. That was my first time driving one. My Insight does way better for local suburban traffic where I live (not city stop and go) and the Prius did way better on the Xway. But for the total price in 2011, I like my Insight. I have to say, if the Prius was just a little cheaper, I'd like it better. It's SOoo much bigger. At least it feels it to me.
I drove a prius 3 for 1500 miles. I got 50mpg driving it like my Honda. When I over inflated the tires, baby it, and tried to take advantage or "ev" mode, maximizing regen braking, etc, etc, etc I got 65mpg.

My first two tanks have gotten 40.0 mpg and the second i only got 38 mpg..
2012 Insight too...but it is probably cuz i do short trips to work and back, probablly 8 miles total at the most...is that probably the issue?

Do you let your car warm up before driving?
