Well, now that I drive agressively I decided to give this another go. As you may or may not know we got 10.8 compression, dual spark. Well it seems the power is more progressive til 4 grand and the petal feels more response. I notice the whole time I had positive ignition timing on my sg2 and it was fairly easy to enter and maintain "lean burn" as some call it on the i2 for 10 seconds at a time. I went from my usual 24mpg driving in stop n go between Hull, Court houe and Midlothian turnpike to 49 by abusing the lean burn mode.
Ive been less than a 59 miles, so Ill see how half a tank goes.
That sounds like fun! I'm not as technically inclined at you, so cannot see if I'm in lean burn or not. I've not tried the 93 octane; however, I did use one full tank of non-ethanol (maybe it was 93 octane????). Anyway, did not notice improved fuel consumption, but it seemed like the engine had a little more power. Would not do it again though as it cost about $1.00 more per gallon than what I use typically.
Basically its when you are using the gas engine and the instant fuel economy read out is between 75 and 100+ mpg. I drove a g1 insight and its the save behavior.
Basically its limited to light throttle, load, top speed about 50 mph and limited to a few minutes, then it drops. You got to lift off the throttle, then retry to reenter it.
Ill see I can do, but I typically keep up with traffic and around here thats upwards to 80 mph.
Driving agressively, I am finding I managed to keep 43 mpg on the mid. It seems the power is more progressive in relation to throttle position and I do not get the dead throttle after the car warms up and Ive been racing to stop lights for 16 miles.
I got my fuel from sams club and as a member it was the same price as regular at a typical gas station.
It was a nice run. The throttle was really progressive in its travel vs engine output and degree of acceleration. I seldom got the roar of vtec kickin in yo.
I saw a high of 17 degrees of advance under hard acceleration and seldom saw a - reading on that part of my sg2.
Well, I needed mo gas and again it was snowing. Everyone wanted 367+ a gallon. I saw a Wawa had it for 347. Wawa, the place my coworkers say causes their check enoine light to come on. I got 8 gallons.
Within a few minutes it became a dog to drive and I was always in vtec mode. At least the timing wasnt -13 degrees.
It was smooth sailing for 19 miles yesterday, today was another story. Man o man what a dog this car is after going from 93 to regular. You really niotice the dead zone where the ima system tops out then the engine takes over. Wow......

Wow only $3.74 for gas? I just paid $4.45 for 87 here in SoCal, I would love to pay $3.67. Gas had just hit $4 when I got the Insight, I just had to fill up when it his $4.45. Right now my MPG display is sitting at 50.1 MPG so I am making the most out of this tank of gas.
Hey, hey, hey, dont give them any idas, its 347 a gallon where I made my purchase. It had gone up as I was driving to 355. Just think, the 93 octane was 349 a week ago when I purchased it.
Think Ill reconnect my egr, air up my tires a few psi and clean all the trash out the back.
With the 93 my mid had settled on 45mpg, with this dog crap gas its 36mpg.
Think Ill look into getting my phev kit repaired too.

What do you figure the most optimum, bang-for-your-buck is? 89, or 92/93? Some places around here sell 92 ... there's one place (only one) that sells 90 but states it contains ZERO ethanol.

I'd be very interested to know what the engine's actually doing when the things you describe are happening. Got any videos our more detailed explanations?
The specs say no lean burn and only cylinder-pause vtec. I've seen some behaviour where mpg gets unusually high in the 40-50mph range. Less sure about vtec.
In the UK, fuel is rated on Research Octane Number (RON). Your 91 is equivalent to our 95. Your 93 is equivalent to or 98. Never thought to try 98RON.
