California to Drop Electric Vehicle Requirements
The Mercury News reported earlier today that California is likely to put an end to legislature that required manufacturers to produce a certain number of electric vehicles each year for sale in California. Known for having the toughest emissions standards in the U.S., California is taking an unprecedented step backwards. This seems to mark the end of commercial EV manufacturing (GM, Honda and Toyota having already pulled the plug on their respective EV programs) and state officials describe the plan as a recognition of new technologies and the impracticality of electric vehicles, which need over 6 hours of recharging to travel 100 miles.
