Default 1991 ABC News - experimental hi mileage Hondas, others

ABC's "World News Now", their overnight news program, runs a feature called "video vault" in which they show some old and intersting footage.

A couple of days ago they found a Nightline clip from 1991 showing how the Japanese were pushing auto mileage figures - including an experimental Honda that got... 100 mpg...

Nifty little two seater. Looks pretty familiar. And when you figure that the claimed mileage was in the lab... the 70 plus we routinely get on the highways in the real world in a production car show how they brought it out for us to play with.

I've put a copy of the video at:
http://www.panix.com/~dannyb/video/mile ... 0-mpg4.mov

It's an 11 meg "QuickTime" file. If you need the QT viewer, it's a free download for Apples and most other common and not quite so common systems, by going to:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime

Oh, wow... what a hoot! Loooved the Nissan electric prototype... where is it fifteen years later? The House has done little of nothing in the last decade and a half about mandating higher fuel efficiency, but it's funny to see Chris Wallace (so young!) and his reporter pontificating about US drivers demanding more power instead of better fuel efficiency, and the Big Three griping about how small better fuel-efficient cars would have to be to achieve any savings... while the Japanese were basically saying, "bring it on..."

I basically believe in keeping the government out of our choices, and letting the market decide in a free-enterprise experiment... so keep the pols out of this, just let the Japanese continue to bring their "little" cars over (like the Insight, and the Civic, and the Prius), and see how many more they sell than lame hybrid Escapes and Vues...

Wow! Thanks for the video. Now I have another video clip that has the GM Impact in it!

That is really sad thinking how much stagnation there has been with the US auto industry All well, I'm off to the SEMA show next week so we'll see if they have anything new of interest to unveil.

Hmmm.

Maybe instead of an Insight, I'll buy a Civic VX. 51mpg. Impressive for a non-hybrid vehicle.
