If you can have your friend idle it for 30 minutes every 4-5 days, you should be fine. Otherwise, buy or build a grid charger and just charge it when you come back.
Quick question: I'll be traveling in the near future and parking my 2002 for up to 8 or 9 days at a time. I have a friend close by who will take the car out and drive it a bit to keep the batteries "fresh". How often should that be done? Is it OK to leave the car set for a week without driving. Several posts allude to the fact that it may not be.
This is the 2002 I bought on ebay in October. It may have been sitting for a few months previous, but right now charging system still seems good after 6 months. I get an occasional recal, usually when I get below 1/3 charge after climbing hills on the Interstates at 75 MPH.
I am looking at possibly picking up an inexpensive used high-mileage Insight (160K). I believe I am told the IMA battery is bad, though I don't know the details yet. Worst case scenario, what would a full rebuild/refurbish cost from you? I'm trying to get some information in advance of negotiations, that's why I have so little information.
thanks,
Linda

Brilliant lady that I am, I found your site which answered my questions, as far as I need right now. But I may be back in touch soon..!
Ron, I was re-reading your last message to me, and I think I misled you in my use of the deterioated battery pack. You probably think I meant the "IMA battery switch". In reality I meant the CARD switch that I installed. I still play with the CARD switch as described before and have no drastic negative results. (now over 44,000 miles since the first IMA light) It seems if I overheat the battery either from an excessive discharge rate (time) or regen (time) I will get a recal and IMA light. It will happen mostly during a definate "hot" outside temperature. Now I'm starting to use the AC full time. I am still experimenting and when I decide to replace the battery, you will be on my list. Keep up the good work....Willie
I'm a completely satisfied customer of Ron Hansen's Hybrid-Battery-Repair. I've had my reconditioned battery pack back in the car for over a month now and it is performing like new. Back in February 2009, my 2000 MT Insight's (178K) IMA light came on with a p1447 and p1449 code. I didn't really know a thing about what to do at that time although I knew I wasn't going to pay the dealer the $5,200 they wanted to install a new battery since my warranty had expired. After a lot of research thanks to Insight Central and the many helpful people I met, I decided to give this a try. I'd strongly recommend his service to anybody who is trying to decide what to do about a failed battery.
I certainly know who Don Pardo is/was-just bouncing the joke back to you. You are doing a great service. I'm almost tempted to ditch the dealership altogether and use one of your battery packs. Jim
