"alternator" testing

From what I have learned from my scan guage the "alternator" does not keep the battery under a constant charge, but charges it when it falls below 12.5, the brakes are applied and when coasting or regenning.
Makes me wonder if a 14 volt or some performance battery with a higher state of charge would help cheat the system into getting more fuel economy?
