If you have it available for free, use it. If not, don't worry. I work on airliners and we only use dry nitrogen because it is more stable in the extreme temperature fluctuations and has a low moisture content to reduce corrosion on the wheels.

For a car, if you care enough to use nitrogen, then you care enough to check your pressure every month or two. Most of the article you mentioned talked about tread wear, tire failure, mpg, etc. That's all ASSUMING that you let the pressure drop.

Race cars use nitrogen because it is dry and they know exactly how much the pressure will go up as it heats up, so they can plan ahead to have the tires ready at the pit stop. If they were to use compressed air, the moisture of the day would affect the expansion and pressure changes at temp.

In reality, your car tire doesn't know the difference. Moisture and corrosion is not an issue with car wheels. The exterior of the wheel gets more corrosion than you could ever get from the moisture content of the air in your tires.

Regardless, always monitor the pressure of your tires and you will be fine. Don't be fooled into thinking using nitrogen improves anything other than your laziness to check the pressure. You'll still need to check and adjust pressure, and you'll still need to add more when winter comes along.

I seriously question the point that compressed air loses 2psi per month and nitrogen loses 2psi in 6 months. If that claim is serious, there are a lot of qualifiers that they did not mention. Besides, the weak link in pressure loss is seldom the porousness of the tire compound versus the molecular size of the air.

Don't pay for nitrogen in your tires.

And, of course, air is 78% nitrogen....
