You can say the hybrid battery in the i2 has almost the same storage capacity as a garden tractor battery.
Since its made our of nickle metal it can be rapidly recharged and discharged. If you tried that with a lead acid battery you would boil off the electrolyte or instantly convert it to steam.
As is I can get the battery fully charged coasting half a city block. This is one reason I want to extend the range by adding a second battery and converter. Mike D2K used 4 group 24 deep cycle batteries with some converters to step it up.
Then he has these large solar panels he sits on the rear hatch to recharge them while at work and plugs in at night. He has a first gen insight and those cars have a 400lb cargo capacity, rated anyway. The i2 is at 900lbs, so I am sure the extra load wont cause any problems.

That was what the original Insight concept was based on as a storage source. It's a bit too expensive though and extremely dangerous if something goes wrong. The capacity and weight would be less if they went with lithium or capacitors. The reason for higher capacity with NiMh is it provides higher output power, with lithium there is more ability to put out power so less capacity, cost, and weight would go into the pack. A few years ago Honda had a press/news release of some sort discussing how lithium, once implemented by Honda would result in a cheaper pack due to the ability to get that same power under the smaller capacity pack. It makes sense too for the stock system, not much capacity is needed to store regen for the next acceleration for most cases.
Prius batteries will give 1300-1780 kw-hrs depending on model. The 700CCAA for a car might look impressive, but it can only sustain for a couple minutes. The prius is givig you 6.5 amp-hours, but at well over 200 volts.
