Default Dent in Hood = Means for Solar Progress? :)

So on Thanksgiving, I decided not to stay the night and took the long ride home. Unfortunately, some car kicked up a rock and put a nice scar in my hood.

The insurance company gave me ~$300 to fix it after deductible. I figured that (like when my door got a dent), I could probably find and replace it cheaper - and have an excuse to take a long drive to get it.

However... Maybe this is something to be thankful for? With my free time, and pretty much finishing up what I currently want to do on the Insight, I've been thinking about going solar.

Our resident genius, Mike, has talked about this and covered it on his blog here:

MIMA Honda Insight Modified Integrated Motor Assist - Plugging into the SUN
[Image below from post on this blog - please let me know if I should remove it from here, Mike.]

He gave the community some info on a thread (maybe I'll find the link and post later), and the cells weren't that expensive. So maybe this could be the universe telling me that instead of using a vinyl band-aid or buying another hood, I should just cover it up with panels and get charging!

Mike gave his blessing for going that route, so it'd be great to stop stepping on his toes in the grid charger arena. What do you guys think? I don't mean that I'm looking to sell kits or install or whatever, just have something else insight-related to take my attention.

I should have January's mortgage covered, and am fairy certain I'll be back on my feet by Feb, but the thought of holding the cash for mortgage still remains. However, I've got the time to do some really cool things that I may never have again until retirement (when this will all be old news).

Thoughts?

Well since the Insight's hood is a rock magnet I would think you would be replacing a few cells a year. So you would need a mounting option that would let you easily replace damaged cells.

I personally think solar cells would be better on the roof of the car or even better on the roof of a house.

Go for it. My idea was to line the hood with cells for the 12 volt side and get one of those converters that bucks up the voltage by taking amps so you never brown out. I would use the roof and rear glass for the hybrid battery.

I was going to coat the hood and roof in clear or white vinyl before installing the cells. Then cover them with a sheet of clear vinyl.
