Everybody has their own opinion.
After 211,000 miles (with the turbo) I'm still wondering if it will work.

It is true that the I2 is more complex than the I1. The CAN now pass a lot of messages to the several ECUs of the car from multiples sensors. I don't think CAN was in the I1. Some mods you would do, like a Turbo, will definitively affect some attributes, and if you don't consider them in the overall "soup", the taste will be different (and may taste bad depending what will be changed....).

To give some examples: ICE temperature, will send a message and the ECU will process something like : If temp = X + coolant temp = Y + accel pedal pressure = Z + speed = A then recycle coolant + start fan.

Another example : If SoC = X + accel pressure pedal = Y + load on ICE = Z then adjust injection for 80% on ICE and draw 20% on electric motor.

There is ~1800 message per seconds going through CAN at all time... they are not all relevant for an action, but are all relevant for the "soup recipe" to taste good. Any performance mod can potentially affect it. Not all mod will require modifying the way ECUs works, but some would.

Keep in mind, just the portion of the ECU that control the pressure traces in the ICE, which is the basic output for the torque(and more...), which in turn is the basic output for several behaviors or the car, has somewhere around 20,000 algorithms to work fine. I would be 99% sure a turbo will affect several of the input/behavior considered in these algorithms.

id just like a little more hp
enough to feel the car a little faster without making it givin me trouble

would an intake be enough?? or a turbo be better?

Cheesie, the first few posts are kidding. Only problem Willie had was needed to replace the head gasket.

Many guys who go balls to the wall modding their car do have CEL lights that are on all the time, but still run fine. These have lots of boost, multiple turbo chargers if not a piggy back computer. Even if you throw a code, it wont stop your car from running., I threw an IMA light with my grid charger, but a second twist of the key turned it off and no code was recorded by the computer. Thats not going to stop me from condition/balancing my pack several times a year.

So.... What are your real plans that will throw codes or turn your car into a pool of liquid metal and smoking rubber? You replacing the engine? Adding 2 turb chargers and 30lbs of boost? Relacing the motor with 3 ima mothers sandwiched together?

So, I take it you want a CAI? I do too. I tried the warm air intake, removing the snorkle, blocking the vent to under the hood and every attempt to make the car breath warm air causes my mpg to go down and I seem to use more assist vs just motor. Seems our engines like cold air. I guess that makes sense with the compression rato to help reduce knock on pump gas.
