Default DIY oil changers, how much oil did you use?

I changed my oil on my Insight for the first time and used a little more than the stated 3.4 quarts. I used and extra 6 ozs to get a 100% full reading according to the dipstick. I determined this by letting the car sit overnight on a flat surface. I was told with this cars 1.3 L engine, oil level is much more crucial for heat exchange, preventing wear and optimizing mpg. Too much oil is no good either.

Some of you think I may be going overboard however, I read a thread on here where a mechanic used 4 quarts of oil and the Insight ran like shit. After the owner siphoned out .5 q, everything was fine again. I'll see if I can find it.

I accidently put in all 4 qts my first change and it read just a tad over full. I never looked back as I do run at high speeds for hours on end and the extra allows more cooling, more reserve as the rest waits for gravity to pull it back to the pan.
