It's a Honda thing.
I have a 2001 Civic LX and it does the same thing...when flooring it it really gets up in the red before it switches gears. It's done that ever since we got it - it now has 203K miles on it and we've had the transmission repaired once at 185K miles. Other than that its been fine.

I wouldn't worry too much, your car is slightly more advanced than your alarm clock. It may read red on the dash, but the computer's supposed to start killing power when you get to toward the limits of its ability to stay in control. In theory, the car shouldn't let itself wind up so high that you see any parts come out of the hood (or worse yet, through the firewall).

Since its an automatic you have nothing to worry. I soiled my underwear one day I was driving a stick shift and went to 2rd instead of 4th Weeeeeeeeee.

Twice now I have shifted to nutral thinking I was in sport mode and returning the car to drive. No ill effects. Still the least rpms you use the better for mpg and life.

Cheesie....It's a Hybrid for godsake! Not a racer!
I have a weekend racer for stress releasing. My hybrid is for daily commuting.

"Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first hybrid racer. The Insight will be that racer. Better than it was before. Better...stronger...faster."

I floored it when driving tom the Bay Area to Vegas.. about 6.1k rpm when gaining a lot of speed to pass a car.. Didn't go all the way to the redline mark though, stopped at 6.1k and slowly dropped the rpm by itself.
