Default TPMS sensors

Just about to order my new wheels and tires. I had some questions for the people that have acquired new wheels. First did you keep the TPMS sensors? If so, did you buy new ones or just put the stock sensors back on? If you did not keep the sensors did you disable the warning light? If that can be done. Thanks for the info and help!

Default Tirerack.com - $144 for 4 TPMS sensors

I can only speak for myself, but if I was going to shell out big bucks for 4 new tires and 4 new wheels I would also spend the extra $150 to get TPMS sensors for the new wheels and just leave the original wheels and tires and sensors intact.

And since I like the idea of constant/automatic tire pressure monitoring I would never disable the TPMS.

But that's just me...

Check with the dealer to see if 4 additional sensors can be programmed into the TPMS computer. If not, I think you'll have to have the sensors on whatever wheels you are running initialized each time you switch.

Default Good catch

Also from tirerack.com:

Quote:
New TPMS sensors must be initialized at the dealer. This charge is not included in the cost of the sensors. If TPMS sensors are not installed in the wheels, the TPMS warning lights will stay permanently illuminated and an audible chime may also be heard at start-up. The vehicle's VSA (Vehicle Stability Assistance) will not be able to be turned off. In certain winter conditions it is useful to have the VSA turned off.
I didn't think about the extra cost of initializing the sensors.

It's not worth keeping the old sensors and here is why:
1. You have to pay to have the stock tire removed from the stock wheel to get the sensor off
2. you have to pay to get the stock tire put back on the stock wheel so you can keep them for back up or sell them.
3. and now you have to pay again to get the sensor and new tire installed onto the new wheel.
Mutilpy the above 3 steps four times and that amount pays for new sensors.

I bought new sensors when I got my new wheels and tires from Tire Rack and
the money I saved by not using the old sensors paid to have the new sensors programmed at the dealership.

Tire Rack does not charge to have the sensors installed and the tires mounted and balanced when you get get a complete package.
( 4 tires & 4 wheels)

I can't believe the difference new wheels and tires have made to my car.
With new wheels and tires my Insight II is now a great little sports car
that also gets great milage !

What tires/wheels did you get? Are they the only wheels you run, so you have only one set of TPMS's you need to take care of?

Here is what you need to switch from winter to summer tires and back again without paying the dealer to input the codes/serial numbers for the TPMS sensors (more than once...)

ATEQ TPMS Quicket Device | Revolution Supply Co.

I do admit that the cost of this is ~ the cost of paying the dealer twice to have the codes read/inputed into the Insight's computer and would only be cost effective if you are swapping tire sets. I have two Hondas that I will be swapping tire sets on so it quickly pays for itself for me.

The Insight's computer only holds 4 codes so the Quickset holds upto four vehicles with 2 sets of tires (or 1 vehicle with 8 sets! )

The Tire Rack USED to sell this device online but when it became hard to get they stopped offering it. I haven't check the Tire Rack site for it lately so YMMV. It took me over a month for the above company to get stock in when I tried to order one through the three companies that had web sites offering them for sale... All three were out of stock at the time I was trying to get one.

IF the Tire Rack will tell you the codes for the new sensors (I have read they will and won't tell you the codes ) then all you would need to do is use this device to load the codes into the Insight's computer. If they will not tell you the codes (serial numbers, whatever...) then a trip to the dealer or someone who can reset you computer is needed.

I have one of these Quicksets and two sets of stock wheels with stock TPMS sensors. I have one set of winter tires and one summer tires. This past weekend I removed the winter tires, installed the summer tires and then used the Quickset to input the summer tire sensor codes into my Insight's computer and then drove ~ 1/4 mile @ less than 20 mph to have my warning light go out. BTW, I was in my housing area with a posted speed of 20 MPH and didn't get off my local street before the light went out. I was kind of surprised and happy that it worked as well as it did!

Be advised that you can read whatever codes are stored currently in your Insight's computer for the TPMS sensors with this device.

My problem was I wanted to get on my winter tires NOW and I couldn't get the Quickset (backordered) so I went to the dealer and paid the $$$ to have them read the codes off the old and new wheel sensors. I asked for the codes and they supplied both sets! Once I got the Quickset, I connected it to my Insight and verified the codes that the dealer gave me.

If you can get a Quickset BEFORE you unmount your current wheels you can read the wheel sensor codes first and then go to the dealer with the new (to you) wheels/sensors and pay the dealer $$$ to read the sensor codes and input them into the computer. Once you get home, you can then use the Quickset to read the new codes and save them both and then you can swap tire sets whenever!

I had my stock TPMS put on the new rims at no charge. Tirerack people are just trying to rip you off by charging extra for it. Most rim/tire shop I know will do this at no charge since ALL new cars now a day has TPMS as it is required by law for all car manufacturers to have it.

In defense of Tire Rack, how are they supposed to get the old sensors and install them on the new rims and then ship them out? Changing out TPMS's are more involved than just pulling a new valve stem through the rim. Usually new seals and nuts are recommended and they should be torqued. Good that you got it for free...or maybe your tire shop just included it in the overall labor. I don't see any ripoff from Tire Rack.
