Right. Sometimes when reaching a red light/stop sign/junction (whilst in D) and stopping, the engine WILL NOTgo into idle stop for it's own reasons. This has been discussed extensivelly before.
However, if it does not go into idle stop, if i shift to N(eutral) the engine WILL STOP. Shifting back to D maintains the idle stop till i lift my foot from the brake pedal and drive away.
This observed by all?
2010 Insight Auto Stop function as per the owners manuals. Happy reading:
Auto Idle Stop
To help maximize fuel economy, your vehicle has an Auto Idle Stop function. Depending on environmental conditions and vehicle operation, the engine will shut off when you come to a stop
The engine automatically stops when:
- The vehicle comes to a stop with the shift lever in the D position and the brake pedal pressed.
- The engine may also stop when vehicle speed drops below 7 mph (11 km/h) with the brake pedal pressed
The engine will NOT stop automatically under the following conditions:
- Vehicle speed does not go above 7 mph (11 km/h) after starting the engine
- The engine coolant temperature is low
- The transmission fluid temperature is low
- The vehicle is stopped with the shift position in R, S, or L
- When the vehicle is stopped on an incline
- The climate control is in use and either defrost* or defrost/feet* is pressed
*The manual actually uses the icons from the climate control here, they won't cut and paste for some reason
The engine MAY NOT stop automatically under the following conditions:
- The IMA battery charge is low
- The IMA battery temperature is excessively high or low
- The ECON button is off, and there is a significant difference between the ambient temperature and the temperature setting of the climate control system
- The climate control system is in use to dehumidify the moist air inside the vehicle
- The vehicle is stopped by braking suddenly
- When the ECON button is on, the engine is more likely to stop. See page 124 for the ECON button
The engine automatically restarts when:
- The brake pedal is released
Under the following conditions, the engine restarts even if the brake pedal is pressed:
- The shift position is changed to R or L
- The accelerator pedal is pressed
- The pressure to the brake pedal is reduced and the vehicle starts moving while stopped on an incline
- The IMA battery charge becomes low
- The engine coolant temperature becomes low
- The pressure on the brake pedal is repeatedly applied and released slightly during a stop
- The ECON button is off, and the difference between the ambient temperature and the temperature setting of the climate control system becomes significant
- The climate control system starts to dehumidify the interior
- This indicator blinks when the Auto Idle Stop system is in operation.*
* Again the picture in the manual won't cut and paste.
If the driver’s door is opened while the indicator is blinking, the buzzer sounds to notify that the Auto Idle Stop system is in operation.
I'm going to give that a try right now. I've got 28°F right now, and my car's been parked for several hours, so it'll probably not want to 'idle stop' on its own.
Well, I tried, but to no avail. The first few times I came to a stop, the car would not idle stop, so I tried N. It made no difference. After a couple minutes of driving, however, the car was warmed up enough to idle stop on its own (with climate control turned off, anyway).
As long as the engine temp is to optimum temp (that blue engine light in the console cluster turns off) I cannot make it NOT auto-stop, as long as ECON is turned on.
I do have a 2011, supposedly there is a difference between 2010 and 2011's regarding auto stop.
There should be a flash upgrade available for 2010's to perform the same I would think.
I just got back from town where I dropped my wife off at a Red Box and sat there for a good 10 minutes or so. Auto stop engaged. The engine kicked back on after 2 minutes or so, then I finally just put it in park so I didn't have to sit there with my foot on the brake pedal.

Disclosure: Affiliate link, note, you may simply do nothing.
I got mine to do it twice, and it failed 4 other times. All times the engine was up to temp and the outside temp was about 70. I need to test the variables to see what criteria I need to meet.

So there may be some hope for me, yet! We should be starting to get some less winter-like weather in coming weeks, so I'll still keep this tip in mind and see if I can get some results, too.
A have observed this shift to neutral cause auto stop 3 times in the 25K I have owned my 2010. I believe it happens when the car is approaching the temperature that is needed to allow auto stop. Each time it has happened it was shortly after starting the car and near reaching the auto stop temp. Shifting into neutral may rerun the logic for auto stop and sense a higher temp than when the car came to a stop. I have tried it dozens of times, but have only got it to work 3 times. I have also observed that if you come to a stop near the auto stop temperature, auto stop will actually kick in after you have be idling at the light for a little while even without shifting to neutral. This has happened on 2 occasions.
