heh I was just reading about this elsewhere too. Here's something from a different forum (iconChevy Truck World - Texas Inspection and HID's Discussion (Texas Chapter))

Quote:
Nope, I'm a State Inspector... What is Legal by the DPS, Might not be Legal by your Local PD... For example, If all your seat belts work, then your truck passes inspection... EVEN IF YOU DONT HAVE SEATS!!!! Now, Its illegal to drive around with out any seats by Local PD...

Put it this way, ITS ILLEGAL To install HIDs in Housings Intended for something else (Halogen Housings)... Only DOT approved HID after Market housings are the Ones Make by Osarm (Xenarc) and the TYC projectors that are made for HID...

O, And your headlight Temp cant be any Cooler than White... 8k and 12k Kits I dont pass...

If you passed with 8k or even 12k, Chances are your Inspector gave you a break... Also, Clear Corners, Dont pass...
My experience with inspectors is varied though.. seems like it's up to the mood of your particular inspector and not really depending on the strict laws of your state (Hawaii is a total bitch about tinted windows, depending on which inspector you go to). Our Insights have a really nice projector system and the light pattern is precise no matter what bulb you have in there. Chances are if you don't mention the HID upgrade ("It came that way from the factory, I swear!"), you'd probably be fine.

As long as they are not any crazy colors you are ok. I pass with no problems with hid for lows. For highs I switch out to regular bulbs as the hids take a few to light up,

It varies from states to states.

CA only requires smog check I think. Which doesn't have to check headlights or at least they don't care about it as long as it works and all the lights are available to pass the test.

In Georgia those that live in the "city" have emissions inspection but the rest of us? No inspection of any type. Some times there are advantages to living outside a metro area.

Up in Ohio, they let you drive anything. They allegedly do random inspections at say, traffic stops and such by the police. But, having lived there before I never experienced a single occurrence of that ...

So in Ohio, if you can get a couple axles strapped across a long rat turd and get a seat belt apparatus on there and somehow get it self propelled, you're set and good to go.

There's inspections in West Virginia but it's not for emissions.
