Default Get Outta The Way! (new horns)

Grabbed some new Hella 003399803 supertone horns off of amazon this week.

Installed easily enough and sounds deafeningly better!

I took a before/after video of the sounds and am waiting on the youtube vid to finish processing; will post it here later.

The stock:

The comparison:

The new horns mounted to stock bracket:

The new horns installed (before putting the panel back on, I covered that relay in a weather boot.. just in case):

I think it will be terrifying for all involved
These things rattle the floor when blaring. Totally worth the effort hehe.

Here's a video- not nearly as impressive as when heard in person.

steveb077,

virtual high-5! i installed the EXACT same pair of Hellas over the weekend. Plus I changed the stock wiring to thicker custom ones, and added in a extra relay that draws juice straight from the 12V battery.

Man, i LOVE these new Hellas. They sound so sharp and loud v.s. the pissy OEM ones we have (which are crap. i guess the Japanese are way too courteous to use their horns? )

Like your custom install job, but I decided to space mine out and install 'em on a custom mounting bracket...

before i went w/the custom-iron-rod approach, i mounted the horns side by side, using the existing OEM horn mount point, just like you...

then i realized if you space them out a little, the sound is a little clearer. a little sharper. and a little louder (which to me, makes a big deal! since i want volume over quality)....

if you want to improve over your v1.0 job, try reinstalling & spacing them out a little... you'll notice a slight - but immediately welcomed - change in sound volume

Awesome job! Definitely have been thinking about spacing them apart just a bit.

I've noticed that they're so close together on my stock bracket that they buzz against eachother when firing.

I'll split them up this weekend for that extra volume and to kill the vibrations.

*horn-five*

if you space 'em, you gotta use a solid steel (thick) brace though... as those horns of ours sure are heavy.

my pic doesn't show it - but each horn's mount point is sandwiched between two pieces of metal bars. then screwed tightly together.

it still vibrates though - can't be helped, given the whole bar hangs upside-down T-like... from that single OEM mount point for the default horns. if i had more time, i'd take the whole thing apart again, realign the horns so they're symmetrical distances away from the H badge, and change the plasticky default mount point w/another custom metal brace, so it vibrates less.

love frontal car reactions when i press my horns - some swerve. some hit their brakes. other lane-cutting punks think twice before cutting in, then obediently wait till i pass before they do. awesomeness (as South Park's Cartman would say: "Respect my AUTHORITAY!") D

I agree with both of you guys, the OEM horn sound doesnt quite get the job done when it comes to alerting people on the highway.

I was thinking of replacing the stock horns on my I2. I was wondering how you removed the plastic housing between the hood and where the horn sits. I saw your pictures (really big help btw), and compared them to how my insight's setup is and there is a plastic cover in the way! Also are there special adapters and etc needed for the hella's or is it just a matter of splicing and soldering the current wires to connect to the new horns, and how do you relay power directly from the 12v battery as infinitium did?

removing the plastic panel (where the metal lever that locks down the hood is located) is easy... just bring a flat-headed screwdriver and look for the screws holding it down.

insert the s/driver between the panel and the screw head then gently lift 1/2 inch or so.

then grab the popped-out screw head and gently rotate left/right, to pop it right out. you may have to wiggle it a bit to get it loose. don't be afraid to use force - the screws are solid metal so they won't break.

BE VERY CAREFUL when you pop-em out... that you don't drop 'em in the engine bay (like i did)... it's a pain to get the screws out from the undercarriage

as for wiring to the battery, there shd be a wiring instructions guide in the Hella box kit. the connection is very simply horn --> relay --> battery terminal.

all the best dude...

I think your money would of been better spent on a defensive driving course. AAA offers those for less than 75 bucks on most Saturdays, plus they give you points that adds a positive balance to your driving record.
