I don't think you can go wrong if you have a few grand to upgrade your performance. It effects both acceleration and mpg.
I hear what you're saying. A PHEV kit seems like one of those mods that you actually, in time, recoup most if not all of your money. I can see it adding to resale value as well. Plus you never know if something will happen to make gas shoot up to 5 bucks a gallon. In that scenario an extra 15(or more) MPG will help a lot.
Once you finally get everything set up is it pretty maintenance free?

The only maintenance is to balance the cells, unless your bms has that already. Mines does not. I checked my cells for the 2 kilowatt unit and found they were all over the place. I used a hobby battery charger/balancer that supported lifepo4 cells and went through each cell at 1 amp. It took like 16 hours altogether. A better way would of been to hook all the cells in parallel and left them on the hobby charger for days on end.
The bms works best to balance without powering the car as it uses up some of the power. Just take it easy the first ten or so uses.
Once you get the kit together, run it through a supervised charge cycle, then let it sit for 6 hours or so and re check it.
The 4 kilowatt upgrade was real force cells and they were all the same voltage. (higher quality) So far, nothing has been done but use and recharging. I check the display to make sure the cells are near each other and look for any damaged wires or rodents. To date they are off only by a few in the 2nd decimal place.
An example of the hobby charger is item 250935231867 on ebay. There are tons of the imax charger. I got 3 withthe ac-dc wall wart. Otherwise you need a 12 volt power supply o a battery to power it. I suggest getting a multi meter too to double check as some of those chargers arent too accurate at their internal readings. Dont bother using their balance feature, mines are all off, but for charging a single cell its dead on.
