From what I have found it looks like the CR-Z and the Insight use the same block, it really seems like the difference is in the head, piston and crank. As long as all things are equal in the block I should be able to transplant just the crank, bearings and rods for some extra displacement. I am just worried that the new block has ONE different sensor placement and throws it all off.
I am assuming you are getting this from a bone yard. In that case they dont care if you take stuff off their hands rather its the crank or whole engine.
Id get the whole engine, so you can mix and match as needed and move stuff around. Of course if you do the crank transplant got to check the journals and bearing surfaces. Thats why I was leaning towards swapping the block with the crank and rods/pistons already installed, so they are worn together and you just bolt on the Insights head.
Reading the gen 1 forum, seems these things run forevar. Id like to remove my engine, put it on a stand and get another Insight and crz engine and put the insight head on the crz block and give it a try.

I can't use the block, they are different, the CR-Z block lacks some sensor mounts and has some different piping. Not much but enough to make them not compatible. I could do a whole engine swap, but then I would also have to change out the ECU and wire harness. It seems much easier to just transplant the crank and rods and hope everything wears out well.
Oh, never easy is it? Mines is still too new to go doing that stuff. Ill wait til its well out of warranty and the engine needs surgery.
In the mean time Ill keep toying with the idea of NOS or a turbo.
The warranty does not transfer, so I only have the 3 months/3000 mile dealer warranty. So once mine is up its all on. I actually found an insight engine with only 12K miles and I may pick it up to get the piston work done. I am looking at about $3000 for the engine, and right now it is about $3K for the brake swap as well. So it will be a couple years of work as I already have $3K in parts and paint happening next month.
