Default Tire comparisons

Hello all.

I need new tires on my 2001 5-spd. I have looked through the vast (and generally very helpful) info on this site but I haven't found anything very definitive about the selection of tires. Costco, my tire source for many years, has nothing skinnier than Michelins at 185 so I guess I will need to look elsewhere. But what should I look for? Mileage is important but comfort is good too.

Thanks in advance.

Roger

Stateside the choices of LRR tires appears to be VERY limited. Europeans apper to have several more choices in LRR tires. AFAIK and from the many threads on this topic all others (available here, USA) but the OEM Bridgestones have a negative MPG impact.

See:

IIRC there is one Michelin that reportedly has the least MPG reduction 1/4 - 1/2 of the above. There was one thread on the topic in the last year or so, sorry I don't have the link.

HTH!

Default Tyres

I concur with the advice given by others, and in my own experience can confirm there are significant differences in mpg and RR between tyres.

In the US the OEM Bridgestone RE92 would be my choice.

In the UK the OEM Bridgestone 391 (equivalent to RE92) would be the choice.

The oem tyres give the best mpg, especially when pumped up to 45-50 psi. I think they handle fine.

Polipe,

Greetings. When I replaced the tires on the Insight, I got them at Costco. Not sure if they carry them anymore.

Hello Resist. My Costco (San Diego) said they can't order them. I will ask again, maybe this time not on a busy Sunday afternoon.

Costco doesn't carry Bridgestone tires any more.

Well that kind of sucks. Now how are Insight owners supposed to get OEM LRR tires?

Pardon my ignorance but it's been 30+ years since I had tires mounted by someone I didn't buy them from. Are there recommended places to go for such things?
