I have a 2000 Honda Insight with around 58,000 miles on itand the IMA light is on but I have still been driving it. If I keep my Honda Insight on a Deltran battery trickle charger, will I ever be on the side of the road if I only drive very short distances around town ?? I plan on having a lithium ion battery pack installed around 6 months from now. My goal is to buy a used Toyota Prius and eventually upgrade with the large extra battery packs that will allow you to be a PHEV. I would appreciate any input.

By that I mean that the car saved the P1449, but only acted on it when it first happened. ...
When I had to replace the pack on my Insight after it sat too long (and may have had a bad battery pack fan circuit), I got a permanent IMA error light. It would stop charging if I had to run the engine above 4,000 rpm, and eventually resume charging on its own if kept below about 3,000 rpm during the same drive. I've gotten the impression from prior posts elsewhere here that it does that to protect the DC-DC from excessive AC voltage from the pancake motor/generator at high rpm, probably also to free up a few hp under assumed high load conditions (I think the old CRX HF did something similar for the same reason, so it makes sense for the Insight to do so in basically CRX HF mode w/o its IMA operational).

The DC-DC will not charge the battery if the RPMs are over 3000, no matter what. This is why the battery relearn procedure has the tech raise the idle over 3000 - to remove the parasitic losses during the test.
