Default Display for MIMA

Lots of choices for displays.

http://www.phoenixdisplay.com/index.htm

Looks like pricing in 1k quanties although less than ~80USD for the touch TFT's that I looked at.

Something I had been looking at in the code was putting in a "blip on the IMA fans for a test" line.
With the HID headlights and LED running lights, and conservative assist amp usage with MIMA, I am not seeing any IMA fan activity with my dashboard indicator. No doubt summer will change that. Nonetheless; I was looking at putting a line in the "run once section" down at the bottom of the code, with the led display test routine. Just a one second on blip, would give an audible (and visual, in my case) indication of fan status. Never got further than lookng at it. And I'ma hacker. not a programmer.

I was also thinking that it would be useful to force the battery fans on on a cold morning, when the cabin is warm, but the batteries are still frozen, as a way to warm them up. Lets make a list of new features, and see what we can do towards making them happen.
Another feature that I would like, is to have the FAS switch closure latch the injector control relay off until MIMA detects that the MAP signal has indicated that the engine has stopped, then it would re enable the relay in preparation for restarting. Probably want a time out if it does not stop in 3-4 seconds.

Matrix orbital makes lots of nice LCD displays, Scott Edwards has more, http://www.seetron.com/, Noritake makes some nice vacuum fluorescent http://www.noritake-elec.com/
A search for LCD displays at digi key yields over 8 pages of choices.
Back light color, transflective, OLED, vacuum fluorescent, touch interface, lots of choices.
That is one of the problems in choosing one. The selection of the display features that would be best for MIMA, for a reasonable price is the first task, determining what to display, and how the user accesses the information, is where a lot of up front engineering goes. Once the display has been chosen, and a description of the user interface written, it is just a matter of sitting down and writing the code. The new PC cards are being modified a bit so we will have all 16 lines on the display port available, a new mini discrete board to make wiring of the new low profile LED display easier, and we will be making a new FAS PC board with low profile relays, so that will also be easier to build. I still have several of the FAS systems all built and available for immediate shipment.
Still have Lots of parts to order, as well as the many other projects that need to get done.
Too many projects not enough time.

90 degree summer temps make me somethimes wish the fans would stay on after the car has been turned off. Either for a configurable period of time (5 to 20 min) or until the battery reaches a desired temperature. I imagine this would require powering MIMA from a source not interrupted by the key.

things that could be displayed on an LCD/VFD:
current in/out
batt voltage
batt temp
fan status
FAS status

Fenrir list

current in/out
batt voltage ( we do not have this information available)
batt temp
fan status
FAS status

The calibration parameters would also be very useful.
Joystick and PIMA ramp slope
Display brightness value
PIMA assist and regen setpoints
ABC regen level and activation setpoint
Mag factor
Option selections
Depending on how we set up the user interface, we may be able to use the touch screen to change parameters?

For the Display, what about a Windows CE machine?

I just bought a stereo head unit with 4" TFT touch screen that has GPS, CD/DVD and Windows CE in it.
It has USB I/O, and SD card input, and can run many Windows CE software packages.
I think the full color video is 440 x 234 pixels.

Whole thing, Radio, CD/DVD/GPS/MP3/MPEG/WMV/SD/USB touch screen, everything was $388.
Very compact and versatile unit. VRVD640G
Single DIN size, fits right into the Insight Dash.
Removable faceplace / screen.

Any chance at all of a USB interface???
I think you can load software via USB, SD, or maybe CD-Rom.
I think it has 2GB internal memory. I suspect MIMA needs only a few KB?

Could we use the windows CE machine, a palm or notebook computer, for sure.
Many people have suggested that in the past, the problem is who is going to write the application software for the windows box?
In theory one could build a small USB MIMA dongle that would interface the car to any PC, or we could use the present board with different software for the hardware interface.
I have no experience programming a windows application with the exception of some visual basic or Labview applications.

The MIMA display lines with the addition of a usb interface would allow MIMA to act as a hardware interface to any computer, once the basic interface was working, the windows system could become the MIMA operating system.

Writing a real USB driver for the PC to talk to MIMA, and writing the USB code for the MIMA side of the interface would need to be developed.
While I have written many RS232 interfaces as well as serial display interfaces, I am not familiar with the USB protocal. This is not something I want to dive into right now with all of the other things on my project list.
A USB MIMA interface is unlikely to happen unless a PC programmer with some time on their hands and the required experience steps up.
Chisight in Chicago has written his own C based operating system for the MIMA card. He was also thinking about an LCD interface when I last spoke to him over a year ago. I believe he set up a source forge open source account for his MIMA code, but I have no other information about it.
Lots of possibilities, all it takes is time and energy, both of which I only have limited quantities of to devote to further development of MIMA.

Understood.
If you could sell a million of them ( or even 10,000 ) it might be worth it.

For the record, the last time I wrote software it was for the Apple.
'( not the MAC )

Well it's finally time. Mima #58, the install - starts this weekend. Mike you've been warned - If your phone displays Ohio Call - you'll know who it is.

Any advice on where the SOC should be before starting, flipping the breaker?
