It will be interesting to see how the system handles a higher charged value. I suspect it will work, but the system may disable charging until you are under 168 - 170 volts which shouldn't be an issue. This should also ensure that you don't overcharge via the stock system if you go on a long trip.

Anyone got a decent photo of the IPU compartment without the battery module in situ? I can't remember what it looks like, just pondering on cell locations etc. I would like to fit them all as one block in the IMA battery position. I might be able to do it if I bin/relocate the battery cooling fan and the MDM cooling trunking. I've cut my old battery case down to just support the junction board in it's original location. I might use an acrylic/lexan clear sheet for a new IPU cover so I can see what's going on and people can see in

Here is a picture from Mikes site that shows prius cells in place of the stock pack.

I never thought of taking pictures without the pack in place

Just thinking outloud/pondering the choices for measuring current in and out of the pack.

I want to get current in/out into my PIC battery monitor 24/7 even when car and MIMA are off but car is grid charging from mains.

The BCM will still be connected anyway and it will do it's own thing with the 10X capacity pack during normal driving etc, it may think things have gone awry when it doesn't run out of steam after 4ah, may have to use IMA current sensor divide by 10 trick.

So I see the following options.

1) Leave the car/mima turned on and piggyback onto MIke's conditioned 0-4V -100 to +100A MIMA output and send that to my PIC.

2) Power MIMA and the BCM/Current monitor somehow whilst rest of car is off and then as (1) above. I don't like this idea.

3) Use my own independent current transformer on the main + powered by my own pic cicruit, I quite like this idea.

4) Use one of these devices with a torroidal core (may not be needed) and it provides a linear output with 1/2vcc as the null point. Looks too easy!

*bump*

I didn't want this thread to die... I'd love to know the latest on Phev Insights!!

@retepsnikrep, how is the experiment coming along?

Cheers!

Check out the "BMS intelligent design" thread for how Peters experiment is progressing. Very well is how I would put it.

I plan on posting my results as they finish up.

But it will be a while before I have finished with my HEV Civic battery tests I am doing now.

After that I will move on to other phases of my version of a PHEV Insight.

Of course there are lots of different ways to do this kind o project and they all have their own pros and cons.

Sure wish I was not so busy with the MIMA stuff to contribute more to this subject and the BMS. I have the pack out of the silver Insight for solar balancing test, so I can take some measurements of available space in the battery area of the IMA box if you still need that info.
The BCM has 10 potted circuits that must provide opto isolation. The Prius BCM below it on the photo has off the shelf opto isolators.

On getting a current in/out of the pack with car off, I would just have a switch that would apply a +12V and -12V external supply for the existing current monitor, and read the current signal into your BMS. Switch back to the stock wiring when you turn the car back on.

I decided to use one of these isolated hall effect current sensors to monitor Insight pack currents.

http://www.allegromicro.com/en/Products ... /index.asp

I did not want to plumb into the stock pack sensor.

Plus this interfaces straight to the pic with no inverting/conditioning reqd. Accuracy is about +/- 200ma Range is -100A to + 100A.
