I would let the driver have TWO chances before the 30 second hold. You may be a bit sleepy one morning and in a hurry to get going. That could cause a mistake and the subsequent delay would just make you later ....and MADDER.

Guys,
I was sent a link to this chip by a friend. Looks like a nice multicell BMS that can be stacked for HV packs.
http://www.linear.com/pc/downloadDocume ... 662,D26880
It also does cell balancing.
I will get a few samples when they are available.

looks nice... especially for Li cells...

I don't know how easily it could be modified for NiMH.

That info has been available for a while, but the actual chip was not available when I looked 6 months ago. I think it's still in testing but samples may now be available. It was inevitable that something better would come along as soon as we had something up an running I've no plans to do anything with it at present so someone else can be my guest.

As my charger won't be arriving until early December I've stalled a bit

Anyway I'm still tinkering with software and other bits. Hope to get Install done by Christmas though

Anyone got any ideas which wire to interrupt at the back preferably, to prevent car starting/running for my BMS security feature.

If we interupt the clutch signal will the car still start by pushing? FAS which wire?

Thanks

The fuel pump if I recall correctly is about in the middle of the car... Put a disconnect on the power feeding that and the car will not start.

Although, it does occur to me that technically even if you prevent the ICE from starting... if you are MIMA equipped MIMA can still use the IMA motor to push the car even with the pumping losses of not running the ICE at all.... so to truly prevent it from driving off you would also have to trip the MIMA disable switch with a relay or something.

Have you had any luck getting an insurance quote for BMS mods and MIMA, and what sort of percentage increase has it turned out to be?

Finally installed lithium batteries in Insight rear spare wheel well. Fit's like the proverbial glove!

http://www.solarvan.co.uk/bms/BatteryInstall.jpg

Also installed display unit in dash cubby hole and connected it to a nearby + feed.

Here's an old pic of it running earlier Master BMS software

http://www.solarvan.co.uk/bms/CubbyHoleDisplay5.jpg

Not installed cabling to rear yet or removed old nimh pack and replaced it with empty case and new BMS. But making some progress.

Interesting to see how extra weight in back effects car. Still got to take out 22kgs of old nimh.

I intend install/testing over next week or so in stages.

1) basic setup with onboard NG3 charger/bms and standard Insight assist/regen etc.

2) as above + test with MIMA which is the manually activated assist/regen system. (MIMA is already installed but can be deactivated for initial testing in stage 1)

3) as above + Speed sensor input (I need to opto isolate this) Software already has (mph/odometer) built in but I then should be able to work on the wh per mile stuff estimated range etc etc!!!

4) as above + Security feature (Insight fuel pump cut out possibly) 5 digit Security code system is already in software and drives a relay, just need to find the best circuit to interrupt in Insight to disable vehicle.

5) I may need to hack the Insight oem current sensor and divide output by a factor of 10 to compensate for the 10 fold increase in available battery capacity. We shall see

My car is now off road with it's innards scattered round my garage

Old Nimh pack out.

New Lithium Batteries are in. I'm finishing off the 3kw NG3 charger install into the old empty battery case now and mains/bms wiring, hoping to get battert case/bms in tomorrow or thursday.

Perhaps have it all together working or not as the case may be by friday!!

Routing the heavy cables is a bit of a fag, I don't want to cut anything but may be forced to cut a small hole in the ipu cover to allow leads through. I'll post some pics tomorrow. Camera on charge

Nice to see the OEM battery current sensor connector is pretty easy to access if I have to hack in a 10/1 reduction circuit due to 10x increase in available capacity. I won't be tackling/connecting the security fuel cut/speed sensor/whmile etc until basic bms is in and running correctly.
