Default Honda insight engine swap

I have been looking for awhile trying to find information on an engine swap to a crx with a insight engine. Has anyone heard of an insight engine being used in anything other than an insight? I have a old 88 hf crx with no engine that I want to put it in. I am not talking about the whole IMA but just the engine, I know the flywheel has an electric motor on it. But other than having a flywheel made and putting an alternator on would I have to factor in? I am not looking for answers like buy an insight since I have owned 2 before, both MT and CVT. Besides they are selling for well over blue book now anyways. Also I read awhile back about the resting idle being controlled by the battery pack? Does anyone know about this? Has anyone had experience with the metro XFI 3 cylinder? I would rather use the Honda motor since I never had any problems with either insights I owned except a wet seat belt. Thanks in advance

an insight engine would require a lot of fabrication to install in a crx. You would have to fabricate alternator mounts, and the engine and tranny mounts would also require heavy fabrication. If you swap a d15z1 from a 92-95 civic vx, you can run your hf trans with mods, or use a later cx or vx tranny(vss). the hf tranny bolts up to the crx mounts, but the cx/vx won't. The hf trans will require mods, since it is cable, not hydraulic, and the speed sensor is not vss, its cable. A bit of work either way. The z1 has lean burn, and can engage and sustain it much easier, and at much higher speeds than the insight. Check out gassavers.org and ecomodder.com for z1 swap info. bunger on gs swapped a z1 into his 88 hf with hf tranny, and stripped it of its interior and everything like heat, radio, etc. He has gotten like 80mpg tanks in the thing. There is wiring to do, since you're talking an obd0>obd1 swap, and you'd have to set it up with an egr which the vx has, but your car is not equipped to run without an egr control solenoid. the z1/hf tranny is THE way to go! or just find a vx, and drive that! xfi engines like to go through head gaskets, and valves I believe. honda-tech.com is good for finding a z1, as is ebay. The z1s on ebay are usually in california, since they are being shipped used from japan, with "approximately 30k".

Why mount an alternator and make a new flywheel?, the IMA motor generates a nice 3 phase AC that can be used to keep the 12v system charged, and completes the flywheel mass. Put a 3 phase bridge rectifier on the output, connect the resultant dc to the dc/dc converter, and you have a 3 cylinder gas engine with a 75A 12V system.
The rest of the IMA electronics can be sent to me for experimenting with.
The only issue may be a rough idle without the dynamic vibration damping that the IMA does at low RPM not available.
