Default Scangauge - Cool way to mount in the Insight

I already had the center dash cover off while mounting a new stereo head unit, so I took the opportunity to glue a couple of magnets on the inside of the overhang. I drilled a hole for the cable under the overhang and behind where the Scangauge will mount (where it can't be seen) and installed a rubber grommet. I Gorilla-glued a flat piece of metal to the top of the Scangauge (it was from a door hinge repair kit that fit perfectly on the top; I bought it at Lowe's for a dollar) and Voila!

I can easlily change the orientation of the Scangauge (by that I mean you can point it straight ahead, toward the driver or passenger or any angle in-between) or even move it around; the magnetic hold is very strong and I can remove it easily (the velcro solution is terrible). Of course, this makes the cable semi-permanent, but I just bought an extra one on Amazon.

Enjoy.

This is an area where the UK Insight has one over the USA insight. We have a central cubby that the Scangauge goes straight into. You just need to put a small hole in the "roof" of the chubby for it's cable, then if you remove the Scangauge your modification will go un noticed.

Note that my centre consol is loose ready for the arrival my MIMA

The cable runs back through the console, so it can't be seen in the pics. Also, you wouldn't want to use magnets if you're still using the factory cassette tape drive as the magnetic field might erase the tapes (I replaced the factory stereo with an Alpine CD player - which ROCKS).

Since taking these pics, I painted the metal hinge black with a Magic Marker; you can't see it at all now.

When I first got the Scangauge, I tried to mount it in the same place (under the overhang) with the velcro that came with it, but the tape fell off within 5 minutes...

Enjoy,

Leo

GRRRRRREAT IDEA! I'm doing mine like that when I get home.

Mine was in that same location, but the tackiest tape I could find, even Indoor/Outdoor tape would not hold my SG for more than a few days. Large changes in temperature along with constant vibration and gravity working against it have been a loosing battle for me.

LOVE the magnet idea. Thanks!

I recently bought a ScanGauge and used a nice windshield mount that I bought at JCWhitney.com.
I mounted it in the ledt corner of the windshield and ran the cable back behind the instrument panel. I am very pleased with the result.
I have posted a few pix at

love the magnet idea

on a slightly related note. how does the UK insight have the cubby hole beneath the stereo? is there less height for the cup holders? or is the entire dash elevated? the extra inch or so has to be made up somewhere, anyone know where? or can a UK owner measure the height of their cup holder space? im just curious as to how and why honda made them different. could be for us Americans and our XXXXXXL dunkin donuts cups
