Default Installing an AFR Meter

Has anyone installed an AFR meter? Where would you install the bung and plug for the wideband sensor as the catalytic
converter is very close to the engine and not much room in front of it?

Editor at Autospeed installed a Motec meter..they are pricey. Innovate makes one considerably cheaper that goes up to
23.


PS: pulled code P1447 a couple days ago...at the dealer getting a new battery pack!

Weld on another bung near the stock bung. Normally you want it a bit farther from the manifold to cut down on heat but there aren't really any choices before you run into the cat.

Keep in mind that most widebands can't read into the lean burn ratios you'll be seeing.

There's not much to see with a wideband though. The Insight runs at 14.7 except when it's under lean burn.

I will try the Dashdyno as it reads AFR from the OBDII plug. Dave at Auterra said if your not happy with the results
return it as it has a 30 day return offer.

It looked pretty tight to install the bung and plug. So will try this first.

No he didn't. I just use it for checking, using a temporary tail pipe sensor. It's not connected all the time. I'd suggest that you just monitor the output of the factory sensor - http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_110625/article.html . Cheap and easy.

On second thought, you're correct. I forgot about NOX purge and cold start. And of course decel fuel cut.

Realistically though that's only a fraction of normal driving so either the gauge is going to show around 14.7, or be off scale in lean burn. At least based on the datalogs I've performed.

Will try this and see if its work.

DashDyno has two auxiliary expansion ports for connecting custom sensors, an external wideband O2 controller and an external GPS. The ports have analog and digital inputs, a digital output and a serial port for connection to almost any external device.

Wideband O2

DashDyno measures air/fuel ratio from the vehicle in one of two ways:

1. If your vehicle has a factory OEM wideband O2 sensor, DashDyno reads air/fuel ratio directly from the vehicle ECU with no additional hardware or wiring.
2. If your vehicle has a narrow band oxygen sensor, then an external wideband O2 sensor and controller is required.

I bought a used dashdyno from ebay.


It did not seem to support any of the AFR parameters. Either it doesn't get that input
or I haven't figured out to make that work.



But I was able to get 2 parameters based on 02 sensors, so I set up the
guage funtion and alarm settings to turn green at <.2 and red at >.8

It appears as though this indicates when its in and out of lean burn, rich mixture
for starting, NOX purge etc.

Its a lot easier to monitor with it mounted above the dash and the red and green
lights instead of looking down at the stock meters.

Once I get it dialed in I will shoot a video of it in action and post to youtube
for opinions as to whether or not it is indicating AFR.

Everything I have read about wideband sensor location is that they must be mounted before the catalytic converter. Otherwise the reading is not accurate
and reads more lean, which could be calibrated if it was on a dyno only?
