Default Stock tires are crap in the rain - Goodyears?

As mentioned in many other threads, our stock tires have greatly reduced traction in the rain. When the road is wet, I just spin out, and when there's standing water sometimes I just turn around and go home.

The car is five years old now, so the original tires (I have, at most, two left) have hardened rubber.

Are the Goodyear Regatta's sized 175/65 R14s the best tire for the rain that is still available in a size that fits our car? BTW, Firestones are NOT an option.

The "absolute" best rain tires are usually unidirectional and advertised as such (rain tire). However, the degree of improvement over most other tread designs a slight. ANd getting them to wear smoothly is problematic.

Most major tire brands will have a size that's close enough. Just remember wider is a degrading factor for traction in slippery conditions. Pay closer attention to the revs / mile so you don't introduce too much speedometer / MPG meter error.

HTH!
