I am in the process of installing, permanently, a computer running XPe into my 2000 Insight. Its a HP T5710 Thin Client that runs on 12 Volts. All solid state so no moving parts, not even a fan.
My first goal is to have a constantly running 7" display (just below the radio) with OBD-II data display. This will be a set of virtual gauges, easier to read than the ScanGauge, as you don't have to read text, just a glance at the gauge. I have a Chinese cable (ELM 327) and some preliminary software. But I am not satisfied with the software I have. It works but is not elegant. I would like to have FREE software, but would be willing to pay for a good package that will run on XPe. The software needs to be able to present virtual gauges, read check engine faults and clear the faults. Any suggestions???
Other additions I will make are:
1) Two rearview cameras to replace the side mirrors
2) GPS
3) IMA battery monitor
4) MagicJack with 2.5ghz antenna on roof

That is intense, Dude. Ye are a true Insighter. I almost feel like we have the old IC back with threads like this plopped down in the mix of 200 new "insight" threads.

I always wanted to have a Carputer in my insight too, but could never figure out a good way to mount a 7" touchscreen (while still looking stockish). I wish the insight had a double din dash, like the asian ones do. And those pop out screens wont work because they popout and up, hiding the a/c controls. I wish someone made a popdown, so the screen would come down instead.
I actually was thinking of just using an extra laptop I had laying around with a broken screen.
I am sure you have looked around on mp3car.com already
Software and driver availability for other than standard platforms will be the biggest issue. I have a GPS that has been cracked for full access to Win CE 5.0 and thought about something similar, but without software or drivers it won't work.
They do make pop down screens that fit into a single dash. I've got one in the garage but havent used it for anything yet. It's a radio/dvd/player/monitor. There are hundreds on e-bay.
Could you gave a model# or something. are they actual VGA touchscreens, or just video screens. The ones that I have seen that pop down are usually just dvd or video screens, and dont have connection for VGA input or touchscreen interface. Thanks

There are hundreds of composite screens available and a VGA to Composite converter is about $35. I still havent nailed down the screen yet.
I dont need touch screen as I will have a track ball and "left button" switch on the center arm rest. So far all my software needs only mouse and a left click.
The screen will be hinged at the top and swing back below the radio. I will move the 12 v outlet somewhere else so NOTHING will be blocked. There is plenty of room there for a 7" screen. Might have to give up the cup holder, but I can build one into the center arm rest.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, the computers on MP3.com are expensive. This HP T5710 cost only $45 including shipping on EBay.
Oh yes, I forgot the original reason for adding the computer....MagicJack...with a 2.5ghz antenna in top for a free "cell" phone.

The HP T5710 Thin Client runs XPe. Cant get much more standard than that.

I just found that CompUSA is selling 7" wide screen format picture frame screens for $29, the ones you put a memory card full of photos into. Anyone know what format they need the information in??? Could they be hacked???

Doubtful since they don't really have the same kind of circuitry as a video screen that drives the display.
I'm looking for one too but for a different application. I've found dozens on ebay for around $80 or you will want go to wallyworld and buy a backup camera and screen but make sure to get the one that has a video composite input as an auxiliary source. This way you could have a dual function screen. While your at it maybe you can find a computer like "Kit" in "Knight Rider". This coupled with the back up camera may allow your insight to move out of the way on its own the next time your son in law starts backing his car around your insight.
