Default Polk DB-651 Speaker Installation...Some Modification Is Required!

I've read the threads of how great these speakers were, and how easily they "fit right in", so I bought a set and installed them last night. The speakers do sound great, and they fit into the recess just fine (4 new pilot holes must be drilled to mount the speakers.) The problem lies with the speaker covers. The covers they give you look rediculous; like a chromed 8-spoke rim. I wanted the stock cover to be used, as it looks better (at least to me,) and nobody can see them (the sleeper kinda mode.) The center tweeter hits the stock cover, and does not allow it to be popped on; not even close. The thickness of this center area of the stock cover is about 3/4" thick. I had to use a die ginder on the inside center of the cover to recess out about 2" round worth of space to clear the center tweeter. It took a little time (times 2 covers,) but just so it is known by those who might be contentplating buying them and using the stock covers. Will try to post pix later tonight......

I used a 2 5/8 forstner bite and a drill press to remove the center part of the speaker cover . It only took a few minutes.

Hadn't seen this thread before. A few weeks ago I put four of these speakers into the stock locations to replace the Sony xplods I had. First off these sounds awesome!! Second, I did use the covers that came with them. When mounting I used the plastic mounting ring that came with the speaker. However I flipped the ring over as the bevel matches the bevel on the door more closely. Then mounted the speakers to the ring. These go perfect (audio wise) with the stealth sub.
