If a mirror starts to desilver, it's virtually impossible to save. I'd say replace it.
In the antique furniture business, an often-used fix is to attach a thin mirror cut to the same size as the original behind the damaged mirror. But the Insight mirror may not allow such a fix due to the thickness of two layers of glass where the design accepts only one. Besides, once you have a new mirror cut to the same size... why not just use the new mirror?
I wonder if any other Honda model would interchange? Element, CR-V, Civic ones? The windshield attachment just can't be unique to the Insight, Honda doesn't usually operate that way, they do borrow from their parts bin and interchange among models...

The reason I asked about repair is that the backing seems to be a thick card that is curling at the edges. It doesnt look like the usual very thin and flaky "silver" coating on most mirrors.

Well, now why would you want to buy something like that from Honda when there are dozens of nicely wrecked Insights in junkyards and almost all of them have nice rear view mirrors? (Even the ones with broken windshields.)

But in searching the junkyards online I find that I am offered three choices, $125, $170, and $210. I also got a comment from one junk yard that says "There are so many options, you will have to call me." I seriously doubt that there is more than ONE "inside rear view mirror for the 2000 Insight."
There once was "honor among thieves." Not any more.

Jim, those are the side mirrors. Call any junkyard that has an Insight and tell them you want the inside rearview mirror, and you should get a quote of about $25 tops. Rearview mirrors are very rarely sold and junkyards love free money.
Try HAP recycling. They have tons of Insights come in. If you have no luck, email me and I'll find you a junkyard at a good price.
Also, I think it may be the same mirror as the Civic.
All you need is a phillips screwdriver to get it out (and the thread goes the wrong way).

I specifically specified the "INSIDE rear view mirror" so if they are that incompetent that they cannot read.......oh yes, I remember the last junkyard dog I met....yes, maybe they cannot read.......
But if they cannot read then I doubt they could tell which car is the Insight. They would have to read the name on the rear of the car.!!!
Thanks for the offer. I will see what I can do and if cant find one I will let you know. I would like to find a junkyard that is local so I dont have to pay shipping.
