Ok info overload. Is this a viable system or is it plug and pray? I don't know anything about the car, don't have MIMA, and really need reliability. Should I play the lottery and wait for the Volt.

Erik is the guy to ask. He sells and installs the kits for the first gen insights. I under stand it works well and just needs a few user interventions like turning the system off during extended auto stop to keep from over charging the battery. I have one in my i2 and it was plug n pray til I figured it out with the owners help at Enginer. I still throw a code 2-3 times a month, but it is easy to disregards and gets me supreme fuel economy and extra umph while driving.

Thought I'd bring up an old thread with an update for you.

Was driving my 2kwh Enginer kit around today and snapped this pic.
This was low speed (under 35) with a stops around my small town.

114.4 mpg for 10.4 miles.

Thanks to Enginer's kit and Mike's MIMA system.

Cool, Eric. It's a real synchronicity to have Mike's MIMA system with the Enginer kit. MIMA gets you the maximum benefit of a booster system like the Enginer kit. IMHO, Without MIMA, I don't believe you get that much out of an Enginer kit alone in a Gen1 Insight.

Good question. If the g1 is anything like the g2 it should be more assist happy with a higher state of charge. 2nd, it should allow more coasting vs regen as the pack stays fuller or fills faster, so you can fast vs regen.

Most of my driving has been with cruse control, then eco mods to allow repeatable tests. Ive abused the ev mode the g2 has and have gotton up to 96mpg.

One of the tricks I found that helps the most is to sit with the key on and phev kit on to fully charge the ima pack. I do this before parking or driving off.

It doesn't seem more assist happy to me. Once it gets down to about 1/3 on the gauge, it will cut back the assist profile and at about a 1/4 it will cut back max assist aggressively. Background charging always happens below about 3/4 and will charge back up to 18 or 19 depending on the car. With an Enginer pack or any other form of extra energy, I'd want the car to always think I have 19 bars as long as the battery is at a safe state of charge. Peter Perkins has figured all that out for us with the BCM tools and ODBIIC&C.

MN Driver,
Thanks for a reminder about Peter's OBDIIC&C, I have not visited that thread in quite a while.
OBDIIC&C Gauge

I may need to add that to my arsenal.
