I havent had much time lately to work on the new console for the car-puter, or its been way to hot out when i have, but i took a bit of time today to make my daily commute a bit more pleasant.
I was not at all fond of the factory cassette player. not that its horrible, but no cd player, very basic factory unit, and looked like it should have been in an 82 accord rather than a modern, highly technical hybrid, Sooo, I ditched it..
I pulled the stereo I bought brand new for my Porsche turbo, waaay back in 2000. Back then , it was state of the art, high tech, and cost a few sheckles. I've enjoyed it and the companion 12 disc cd player i bought with it, for a long, long time and it still works flawlessly. It still has a cassette player in the head unit, but also lots of eq options and other thingies to mess with, and looks pretty cool with a modern lcd display, even now. Its a Clarion ARX6570Z, and it came out the same year as the insight, its hard to believe they choose such a low tech factory stereo considering the options available even then. So this one seems to compliment the s1 insight rather nicely. with the Boston acoustic speakers, it sounds awesome as well...
I put the cd changer in the soft trunk for now. It was about the easiest stereo install ive ever done. I ordered a harness adaptor off ebay for under $7 shipped, spliced it into the clarion harness, and a couple of screws later, it was in. even the cd changer wire routing was a snap.
now all i have to do is figure out if i can use the rca "in's" on this stereo with an external audio source. i cant find the manual, ive got it someplace..
next up is creating a full console between the stereo and the cup holders for the 7" touch screen, and building a mounting system for the carputer and the cd changer in the hatch... and some research to see if anyone's hacked the clarion CE-Net control system to integrate everything
