Default Steering Wheel Mounted MIMA Controls

I'm tinkering with an IMA cruise control project for my big battery pack and want to add some buttons to the steering wheel.

Now I know the steering wheel column uses a coiled flexible connector for the horn and air bag connections.

My question is how many connections does this coil have? Are there any spare?

We know the CVT also has the sport/manual button on the steering wheel so that must? have more connections than on a manual car, or are they all the same? Just unused on manual cars?

Roger you looked at this any ideas?

I obviously won't be putting any signals throught the air bag related connections or switches where they can be fired at me by the air bag!

However if there are any spare connections I may mount some small joybuttons on the steering wheel and feed the signals through the spare wires.

I'm happy to share the ground with the horn so just need one or preferably two spare wires.

Here is a post related to this subject from a couple of months ago:

steering wheel mounted controls - how to wire them

The CVT cable reel has a different part number compared to the MT model so that probably indicates that the CVT cable reel has more wires internal.

I think a good possible solution without any cable reel mods is to use the remote mounted switches from a Rosta Cruise control. The dual switches look nearly stock. This remote is not unique to the Cruise control unit itself so it can be used separately. Each time you push in on a button, the controller sends out +12v (I think) on a corresponding wire.

I think that you can buy the remote option (without having to buy the whole Cruise Control) for about $45 USD.

Hope that helps,

Default Time to make some effort.

I'm revisiting this topic to look seriously at ways of moving the MIMA joystick and button inputs to the steering wheel.

Some discussion has taken place on this before, and it would be useful if someone with a crashed CVT could send me a steering column wiring connector thing. It's the flexible connector which passes the connections between the moveable steering wheel and the steering column for the horn and sport/normal mode buttons. The CVT unit has more wires and may be able to be adapted for manual cars to allow some sort of steering wheel mounted button/triggers. I'll pay postage & reasonable costs. Anyone? I can't do these projects without help from the US.

I have a spare steering wheel which i'm prepared to hack about to see what works.

There are several options, flexible connector or wireless?

The buttons are simple enough and the steering wheel has enough plastic covering to allow two small holes to be excavated to recess them in. The joystick pot is trickier and I propose it is split into two seperate thumb pot triggers one at each thumb position when holding wheel normally. The outputs can be routed to simulate the standard MIMA pot.

For the pot iself size is an issue so it may be better to use some sort of hall sensor with a linear voltage output which then feeds to a converter or digital pot to simulate the joystick. I can't remember if the MIMA joytick is a simple Potential divider type ADC for the two axis, if it is the calibration routine may accept the hall sensor output with minimal modification on the mima pcb. Mike can chip in here i'm sure.

The mechanics of the trigger mechanism might just require us to buy a couple of toy plastic guns, nick the trigger and glue a magnet on end/back. Some experimentation reqd here to get a neat reproducable setup. If people want to sacrifice there childs toy guns in the name of progress feel free and please post pics so we can get and idea of what is available. I'm sure others will have ideas of how to do the actual trigger/thumb mechanism.

Perhaps there is something available on a gamer steering wheel set up we can nick. Do they have any proportional controls on the wheels or is it just buttons?

Thinking caps on please. Ideas?

Some sort of pic project might be reqd to deal with the various inputs and convert them into a MIMA acceptable form. Might need a serial data signal via the flexible connector or wireless to a converter feeding into MIMA. There is a reasonable amount of room within the steering wheel avoiding the air bag to hide a tiny smd circuit. We may be able to piggy back on the sport normal mode wires and the horn supply to get power and send signals.

Uses for CVT Steering Wheel Buttons on Manual...?

Peter,

The sport mode and normal mode switches connect to ground when pressed (page 39-2 of electrical manual). I believe the horn is the same method so there is no power source inside the cable reel (not counting the airbag of course )

I don't know of a source for a cheap CVT cable reel but i can help if you decide to purchase a new one from Majestic Honda:

The horn is a fairly high current device so has a low resistance and one side of it is tied to +12v and the horn side of the ground in the steering wheel is probably at 12v as well and could supply some <25ma current without actually activating the horn if you see what I mean.

The majestic link does not appear to work.

Anyone visit a scrap yard for me and get a CVT cable reel please?

The only problem is that the horn is activated by a relay. There is a relay between the horn contacts in the steering wheel and the actual horn. Page 40 of the electrical manual shows the horn setup.

I was able to click on the link I posted earlier and it still worked. I'll will post the whole URL in text so that you can cut-n-paste if you want:

The Majestic Website, like many others in the U.S., detects the location of each request. If the location is outside the U.S., the response you desire won't be sent. I solved this problem by subscribing to a $7/month Virtual Private Network (VPN) account from Strong VPN choosing NYC as the location of the VPN server for my account. When I want to connect to a U.S. Website that won't work outside the U.S., I turn on my VPN which makes my Web requests appear to originate in NYC. When I travel to the U.S., I pause my VPN account so that I won't be billed for time used until the end of the pause period. Works quite well.

Thanks for the info....That explains it...You would think that Majestic Honda would just supply a redirect html explaining that they don't ship outside the United States but still allow you to view the website. It is not like their is secret info on the site or something.
