I see a few threads around about speakers, just thought I would share about a fully bolt in set. No drilling or cutting required. I did use the grills that came with them, NOT the factory grills. Strangely, Crutchfield says they do NOT fit, but I assure you, they do.
Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the install process, but it was simple enough. I attached the metal bracket (included with the speakers) using the factory speaker holes and screws, then attached the speaker with the grill to the metal bracket. The grills are flush in the door holes and it looks good, if the look of aftermarket grills doesn't bother you. The grills on these do need to be lined up (they rotate at 90 deg intervals) as they have a decal that looks best when on the bottom. Everything was done by just removing the factory grill, didn't have to remove the door.

They sound good to me. Basically what I expected. Much clearer than stock. They don't have that overly bass heavy sound of some aftermarket speakers. I have always liked Infinity car speakers personally. I am just using them connected to the standard tape deck. Since I just listen to the radio and mp3's in the car, sound quality isn't of the utmost importance.
I found the three original speaker screws had to be replaced by longer ones, with the metal adapter plate then not screwed down the whole way. Otherwise the longest of the provided speaker screws don't even reach to the adapter plate (and their tips would have to dig into plastic if they did). That also meant the screw clips those four speaker screws screw into had to be pinched tight so they stay in place on the adapter plate, since they won't be tight up against anything until the speaker is screwed down tight.
Without the speaker cover, the speaker's magnet assembly is a bit too wide for the door recess for it, preventing it from being mounted like the stock speakers.
I considered getting the 6022si speakers, described uniquely as shallow mount, but in close comparisons of photos of each it looked like the 6022i speakers might actually fit better. Without trying the 6022si speakers, I can't verify that though. There would still be the problem with the large depth gap between where the original screws went in and the cover plate holes.
I was surprised how much treble the 6022i speakers delivered. The rotating tweeter reflector assembly is a nice touch, as is the "brightness" control pushbutton. The original factory speakers sound muddy by comparison, with maybe more mid-bass but nothing worth much below it and nothing of the really high notes the 6022i series delivers. I opened up a whole additional aspect of the music I had been missing, the high detail in the higher treble notes.
WWII warbird soundtracks are handled sooooo much better now!
Funny that you had those issues with the install. I put the metal bracket flush into the stock speaker hole and used the longest (1" wood screw type thread) screws to mount the speaker to the metal plate. The wood screw type thread did have to cut into the metal, which was threaded for machine screw threads, and they may have dug into the plastic a bit as you described, but it worked well. They are mounted nicely, and provide great sound.
I like the rotating tweeter as well. It really helps it act more like a component system.
FWIW, I just picked up a pair of Polk Audio db 651s 6-1/2" Slim 2-way Speakers on sale. Dropped right in, used the same screws and the stock covers fit. No cutting or alterations of any kind.
I too used the stock covers as there was a nasty looking ring around the grill using the aftermarket covers. The only other way I saw to do it was perhaps using an 8" grill.
I ended up modifing the factory grill however, as I wanted to use speakers larger than the the extremely limited space allows. It wasn't very difficult though.

Needless to say, a nice improvement over stock.
i know this post is older but why did you use the shallow mount versus the standard 651's it shows mounting depth the same for both.
