Default Help! Need to know what communication protocol 2000 insight uses? CAN-bus? LIN? etc..

Hi, new member here!

I need some info on the Communication protocol the 2000 insight uses. Is it a CAN system or something different? Please let me know asap!

Also if there is any documentation on it available online, it would be great to see.

Thanks

Hi

Have you searched the forum? There is a lot of discussion on here about it.

The MK1 Insight does not use CAN.

Can you tell us why you want to know, and what project you have in mind.

Thanks Peter

Hi, ya Ive been searching all over but its hard when I don't know the name of the system Honda uses. Can you tell me the name of the system so I might find more info on it?

I need it more for documentation purposes than an actual project, Im looking for some of the analog signals that this system should be outputting.

These are the signals I am looking for:

Accelerator pedal position
Brake pedal position
Vehicle speed as provided by vehicle
Traction motor speed
Traction motor power
HV traction battery voltage
HV traction battery current
HV traction battery State of Charge
HV traction battery temperature (maximum)
Electric motor temperature (maximum)
Power electronics temperature (maximum)
Engine speed
Indicated engine power
Engine oil temperature
Fuel level (sensor in vehicle removable tank or pressure sensor for gaseous fuels)
Fuel injector flow rate

Please let me know if you can help.

Thanks

A standard OBDII scanner wont read all the information you stated, only some of the common ones (engine speed, vehicle speed, engine temp, TPS)

If you want all the data for other systems like IMA, ABS, Powersteering, Immobilizer etc... you might have to get an Honda Diagnostic System.

search ebay for "honda diagnostics" some systems come up, but they are much more expensive than a simple OBDII scanner.

I suggest get a manual as some of the info is in that.

Some of the things you mention are not monitored ASFAIK

Oil temp and electic motor temp being two.

Some of the info as already mentioned is only available with the Honda HDS system

There is no simple list available with all that info, you will need to do a lot of digging/reading and actual testing. Can you tell us more about your project?

The motor RPM is same as engine as it is attached to the crank behind flywheel.

Off the top of my head.

Accelerator pedal position. 0-5v 5k pot
Brake pedal position Switch on/off
Vehicle speed as provided by vehicle VSS pulses approx 1 per mph
Traction motor speed. Same as engine rpm
Traction motor power. Work out from current x voltage
HV traction battery voltage. Available on BCM rs485 Bus
HV traction battery current. Ditto
HV traction battery State of Charge. Ditto
HV traction battery temperature (maximum). Ditto and there is a max but not tested ASFAIK prob 45C or so. NIMH batt specs.
Electric motor temperature (maximum). Not monitored ASFAIK
Power electronics temperature (maximum). Monitored but max not tested ASFAIK.
Engine speed. RPM Probably 5v pulses.
Indicated engine power. Engine load available not power AFAIK
Engine oil temperature. Not monitored
Fuel level (sensor in vehicle removable tank or pressure sensor for gaseous fuels). Simple pot/analog sensor
Fuel injector flow rate. Probably pwm square wave pulses at injectors.

thanks for the info retepsnikrep that will help a lot.

This is just a small part of a bigger project, this part had to do with a data acquisition system that is going to be wired up to the car to remotely monitor systems. so I needed to supply some info about the sensors that would need to be added in addition to what the insight already read to cover the entire list.

Sorry I cant be more specific at this time. BTW are there any experienced members in the northwest part of Washington state? We might need advice on some other areas of the project.

thanks everyone
