Default What is the cure for the flaky dash intensity button

The + button that is supposed to increase the intensity of the lighting in the dash is really flakey. Sometimes I press it and hold it down and it takes 3 seconds to change to higher intensity, other times I can hold it seemingly forever before the intensity ramps up.

Is it a dirty switch? If so how hard is it to remove the switch to clean it??

Sounds like "corrosion" on the contacts of all your swithes. My "trip" button wore out a few years ago. They can be replaced, but you have to remove the "instrument assembly". Not really complicated. One of the "Insighters" posted a "how to" which was great. Search function is your best bet. (Still waiting your trip schedule) Good luck...Willie

Well, the wife just spent a two week bout with pneumonia so we are still putting off the trip. Hopefully it will be before income tax day....while we still have some money...#

Thumbs down

I have searched diligently for a how to of removing the instrument cluster. I cant find it. I know its there, or so I have been led to believe. But I cant find it.

The manual says
1. remove the drivers side air bag
2. remove the steering column

That is where I quit reading because I am not going to do that just to fix the flakey switches!!!

Anyone know where that instructional tome is???

1. Remove the 4 nuts that hold up the steering column and let it drop to the floor.
2. With a pair of pliers, pull out the small cover that hides a bolt in the center vent outlets. (You have to pull on one of the vanes next to the vent in the center of the dashboard.)
3. Remove that bolt and the entire cluster trim surround pulls off.
4. Remove 4 bolts and pull out the cluster.
5. Release the 6 catches around the back of the cluster plus the one in the center.
6. Now you have access to the board.

Personally I've only found that 2 settings are needed. Full for daylight and your preference for night time.

See the link in my sig for another modification option.

HTH!

Yes, only two settings are needed. That mod is just what I need. Thanks. Apparently you did a lot of thinking about this as I tried to see some way around the relay and it just isnt possible. That is the best circuit possible....within reason....It will be going into my car....as soon as the weather gets back above 70F. It hit 20F last night, coldest in 20 years!!! Must be Global Warming........

Yah. You should trade your Insight in on a Hummer. Then you'll be ready for 3' of snow on the ground in south Texas!
