Default How many amps can the DC-DC converter put out?

I tried and failed to jump-start a 3.1L Buick Century with my Insight's 12V system. The first turn of the key turned the engine a little, but my 12V battery was too drained by that to start the Buick. A Toyota Sienna was brought over and the Century reluctantly started.

This got me wondering: how fast is the DC-DC converter? Also, exactly when does it turn on? Does the ICE have to be turning?

It puts out about 75A. It only runs when the engine is on or in autostop.

Compared to a normal car it's not a lot of peak amps, and the battery is small. On the other hand, 75A is a lot for idle, and the converter seems to handle overloads well, going into a constant-current mode.

So if you're jumping a totally dead car, let it idle for while (15 minutes, say). This is better for the jumped car anyway... alternators sometimes burn up charging totally dead batteries. If you're worried about spikes, connect the cars then start the Insight. Then turn off the Insight and disconnect before starting the other car.

The jumper cables are the biggest hang up. I learned early on that let it idle, any car that is 15 minutes for a successful jump.

Currently I have a jump starter thing that doubles as an air compressor to inflate tires as I am last to leave my job and help with either.
