Default Does anyone in Hawaii want a battery?

I have a Civic customer in Hawi near Kapaau / Waimea who is buying a battery from me. The shipping is too much to take his old battery back, but it's mine, so if anyone here wants it, I can arrange for it to be available for pickup.

All I ask is that you reuse or recycle it responsibly.

Let me know.

Hmmmm Unfortunately, Hawi is on the Big Island and I'm in Honolulu on Oʻahu, so shipping from Hawi to Honolulu would likely be significant.

How much would just the 20 6-cell sticks weigh? Maybe I could put a few in my checked luggage when I return to Sweden in about a month. I might eventually need them.

Art,

I had no idea you were visiting Hawaii. By all means, you should take this. You will need the sticks in Sweden. The sticks weigh about 2.5 lbs each, so take some this trip, some the next, etc. Some of the sticks should be salvageable, but I have no idea which ones. Take them and worry about it later.

If you want to pay for it, I'll have him ship it to you. I just need your address info and I'll send him a call tag. It looks like it would be about $70 shipping from Hawi to Honolulu via UPS. You should be able to have it shipped cheaper than that via a local carrier, but you'll have to arrange that.

Ron

It's a good idea but not sure how Insight cell subpacks will look in checked in luggage, do they xray it?

I would take as many as possible or perhaps even buy a cheap suitcase the right size and fit the whole battery into it. The excess bagage fee at airport could easily be worth it.

Not sure on weigh limit for suitcases 25-30kg?

In my experience, 50 lbs is usually the limit for standard luggage, beyond that you get charged extra. Just the subpacks wouldn't look any more suspicious in the luggage than the whole battery, just put a note in with it to describe what it is, and tell them when you check it, I wouldn't think you would have any trouble.

Make sure you bring and include the OSHA MSDS for the batteries (they are hazmat exempt).

And whatever you do, make sure you pack them in the same orientation (positive at one end and negative at the other). You don't want them to short out. The square end is positive, the hex end is negative.

At the Honolulu International Airport, all checked luggage is X-rayed prior to checking it in. So the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) agents would definitely see the battery sticks in my luggage. They will also see my Rostra cruise control and MIMA system, both with wiring harnesses, circuit boards, etc. They will also see an oil filter and an air filter element.

I would consider this to be suspicious luggage contents, so I would be very surprised if they didn't conduct a further examination by opening my checked luggage. Then they would find 3 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-20 which they might confiscate if they consider oil to be an unacceptable flammable liquid.

But at least in Honolulu, I will be present when the inspection occurs, so I could hopefully explain the contents of my luggage to their satisfaction. However, we will be stopping in Seattle and Reykjavik, Iceland, for several days, so I will have to check my luggage twice more. But in Seattle and Reykjavik, I won't likely be present when my checked luggage is X-rayed. So it's easy for a security agent to simply confiscate anything potentially suspicious, even if I include in my luggage a detailed written explanation of the contents.

Whatever arrives in Stockholm will be subject to import duty (<10%) and value-added tax (VAT - 25%) assessments should Swedish customs discover these things. I'm sure that I could argue successfully that the battery sticks are used and so aren't worth the new price. But I could be assessed a significant amount on everything that I'm importing and told to appeal any assessment with which I don't agree. Or customs might impound everything subject to my paying the import duty and VAT. I would like to minimize all of these possibilities.

I might have to deal with similar issues in Reykjavik because I'm bringing these things into Iceland. Yikes!

I'm already near my luggage piece and weight limits without the battery sticks. And I don't look forward to dealing with additional heavy luggage containing battery sticks while in Seattle and Reykjavik.

So I've just talked myself out of packing the battery sticks. But I'd like to thank Ron for his very generous offer and hope that this Civic battery finds a good home.

Sounds like reasonable conclusion against taking them on a commercial flight back to Sweden. Would it be feasible to have just the sticks mailed back to the lower 48?

That's actually a pretty funny idea: "if it fits it ships".

That idea is not only funny, but it might also be a relatively inexpensive and fast way to ship battery sticks. The medium USPS Flat Rate Priority Mail box is 13.625" x 11.875" x 3.375", or about 18" diagonal if my Pythagorus theorem calculations are correct. I don't know the exact size of a battery stick, but based on the size of a standard D cell, I would think that at least 2 sticks would fit in one of these boxes. The postage for one of these boxes is $10.20. So it seems like shipping all 20 sticks would cost no more than about $100. Could your customer disassemble his old Civic battery and mail the sticks to you?
