The only potential problem I see in your thought to run the plugs until one fails is that this is a 3 cylinder engine. A V8 loosing a plug is not a real big deal nor a V6 for driveability but as you work your way down to 4 cylinder and 3 cylinder, loosing a plug becomes a pretty big deal.
It is not an easy road side job if you have coil bolts that are rusted / corroded like mine were (Two out of three had to be drilled out).
About 8 years ago, I had an Acura Integra ( 4 cylinder ) and on the way to work, all apeared to be fine....On the way back home about a mile from my house, my car started loosing power in that I could only do about 20 MPH. The spark plugs were way overdue for a change and that day, a plug change is all I did and had no problems afterwards. Didn't change the distributor cap or plug wires during troubleshooting (but changed the cap and rotor later on). Perhaps my experience that day was a weird event but after 105K in the Insight, those plugs deserve a rest

IMO.... They are not too expensive if you buy online and avoid the dealership.
To me, it does not make sense that you would lose MPG if you replace your plugs with new correctly indexed OEM plugs (A, B, C or D).
