Question Install 6.5" Elemental Designs Subwoofer in Rear Speaker Holes?

I have two Elemental Designs EU-700 6.5" subwoofers that have been sitting around for some time, because we ended up not using them on another car.

I don't have their mounting depth on hand. Is there a lot of space to allow for a sub to be mounted in these spaces? Has anyone done it?

And does it rattle horribly, without sound deadening? I'm not looking to shake the car up, just to add a moderate amount of bass to compliment a stock head unit or very lightly amped speakers.

In cleaning out the car and pulling up carpet, I tried, and they definitely won't fit without customization. I'm not in to cutting my car to pieces, so they're out!

They look like they'd be a great fit with some customization though... let me know if anyone is interested!

i am guessing they are too deep? In that case you could always put spacers so the speakers would stick out more from the panel to provide the rear clearance needed. Not sure how that would look though.

Good point - I didn't think of that. I'd like to see if anyone else has done anything similar.

I was about to suggest spacer rings as well, but someone beat me too it.

With a sub you do need to find a spot to mount an amp, and think about the extra draw on the 12v system. It WILL affect MPG, even if only slightly.

One thing to consider is a ser of component speakers. 6 3/4 mid range components can have bass response down to 30-50HZ. This is plenty low enough to get good bass in such a small cabin. It won't send you thumping down the street, but it will make your music sound nice.

In my experience, I like full range speakers up front (I have some with directional tweeters) and component for the rear with the tweeters mounted up front. I put mine in the space in front of the door handle, as someone else here posted.

Another thing to consider: Make sure you have enough power to drive your upgraded speakers. If you get speakers with over say 25W nominal RMS you will have a hard time powering them without an amp (ie with just a head unit). Typically speakers are rated with an RMS range. If you aren't using an amp, look for something in the 2-50 RMS range rather than the 15-100.
