Default REPORT on mileage 0-20 VS 0-30

Here is the definitave answer.

I just drove from Corpus Christi to San Diego...1500 miles.

My recent high mileage record for 50+ miles was 97 mpg (220 miles). This was on 0-20 oil. On this trip, on 0-30 oil, I had one run of 55 miles from Tucson AZ that was 108 mpg. If there is an effect on the mileage, I cant measure it...!...!...! Most of the trip was between 78 mpg and 85 mpg running at highway speeds and no "tricks" with full luggage and two people.

In cold country where warmups rob you of mileage....maybe....there is a measurable effect. But apparently not here in the southland.

The Walmart near me has 3 different brands of 0-20. I just changed the oil and I wondered if I got the right filter. I did luckily but my lawn mower uses a bigger filter!

Having measured the net power and mpg on a few engines the difference is really measured only with careful lab tests and statistics. The temperature is a major factor. Although I've never seen mpg like the 95-105 mpg quoted here I can say lab evaluations at 72 F show a difference of about 55 vs 54 mpg for 20W vs 30W. However raise the temperature to 120F and put greater loads on the engine the 30W has better power and mpg. Its no wonder NASCAR racers use 20W for 1 or 2 lap qualifying.

I've been running the Honda oil in mine. costs me about $30CDN for 3 qts plus the filter, got from the local dealership (they supply parts for a few in the area, so they stock basically one set of the most commonly needed stuff for them).
