If I had them on the steering wheel, I'd want them at the 10 o'clock position in a LHD car because my right hand is often on the shift lever, shifting.
But having the MIMA controls on the front of the shift knob (towards the engine) works well for me. Just far enough down that my index finger can operate the joystick, which has a small ball on the end. The mode buttons are closer to the top of the shift knob than the joystick is (mode 1 button on the left, mode 2 on the right), with flat-topped wooden buttons on the mode switches. The whole business is in an epoxy putty mount painted black, buttons are black, so it's not very noticeable.
I find using it very intuitive, because I often FAS, switch mode 1 on or off, or add in regen just after I shift, so my hand is right there anyway. Plus finding the MIMA controls is easy because my hand is familiar with where the shift knob is.
I have a second MIMA setup on the handbrake handle. That one is more visible, unfortunately. I try to make myself use it when I'm not shifting, to avoid inadvertent loads on the shift mechanism.
But different people prefer different setups.
