Is there a walkthrough for this? Or how can I learn the process from start to finish?

Also, I assume you have lost your storage compartment due to the battery being strapped to the spare tire, is that correct? Would it be possible to keep the storage compartment if the spare tire were removed?

I'd be interested to see pics of how you have it mounted.

Thanks!

Where did you end up installing the dual battery charger setup? Was it mounted in the extra space to the rear right in the battery bay (as others have done), or maybe in the space freed up by removing the stock fan shroud?

Also, are there any considerations that need to be made when charging both? Or do you just connect each side of the charger as you would if you were charging a single battery (before the precharge resistor with a piggyback, and on the negative terminal on the top)?

Thanks!

BTW - any updates on how the setup has been running? Any changes since posting here? Hope all has been running flawlessly!

If you search throught he grid charger thread you will find pictures of my double charger. I removed the stock fan shroud and replaced it with 2X 120mm fans on a flat plate. That left plenty of room for the charger.

The parallel pack has been running for 3 years with zero issues. My friends paralleled Insight has now been running for one year. Both are setup exactly the same. His only issue has been charger related and only because he was leaving it plugged in too long on warm days, he has since started unplugging it sooner to avoid high battery temps.

Attached is the schematic of the major connections. All of the major parts needed are on the second pack. On both setups I simply stripped off the pieces that weren't needed.

In addition the PTC strips from both packs are in serial with and additional trim pot. If I remember correctly I added about 170 - 200 ohms. This forces the system to trip at about 130F vs the stock 160F. This results in a P1449 and an IMA light which will need to be reset, but the main point is the IMA code also shuts down the HV relays.

Prior to the BCM gauge I also rerouted one temp sensor from each pack to a gauge at the front of the car. I now just use the BCM gauge. I also rerouted half of the needed temp sensors to the second pack ... .so the BCM can monitor 2 sensors on each battery pack turning on the fans if either pack gets too warm.

Hope that makes sense, be careful and good luck. As always do this at your own risk.

edit: added a pic of my setup that shows the charger, cooling, and battery.

Thanks very much!

It doesn't seem that you put a 12v source on the charger to run the fans, or am I missing something? That would have likely fixed his charging woes. Did he run into anything serious? Or were the batteries just too hot to function for a little while when the car was first turned on?

Oh, actually we do run the fans off of a 9v power brick, didn't mention that as it is more related to the charger which you are versed in. Mixing of too many different projects :P

I never forget to plug it in, unplugging it is a bigger issue :P Fortunately that isn't an issue 9 months out of the year.
