Default How to Delete Air Conditioning

Pretty sure this has been covered elsewhere on the site, but haven't been able to find it. I know another Insight owner or two has removed the factory A/C and setup the Insight with the proper pulley and belt to run without a/c. I'd like to do that. I never use my a/c anyhow so I'd prefer to avoid hauling the extra 30 lbs. or so around. Advice appreciated.

I think you would see more of a gain if you were to run a new belt without the power steering in the way. You may see even more if re-route the belt minus the power steering and a/c compressor pullies. But I'm new to these cars and I'll let an Insight pro chime in.

Thanks for your post. My goal is to drop the weight I don't need. Wouldn't expect drastic MPG increase or even a detectable increase. Just an engineering exercise.

the insight doesn't use a belt driven power steering, it has electric power steering. Some owners remove the power steering fuse, to disable power to it for supposedly a better road feel and decreased battery load.

as for the a/c delete I suppose just remove all the a/c related parts such as compressor, lines, condenser, evaporator. And get the correct pulley and belt that goes to a non-a/c insight, and replace those.

or follow this a/c install guide in reverse:

FYI - No power steering belt or pulley is used in the Insight and no hydraulic fluid is used for poweer steering....Instead, the Insight uses electric power steering driven by an electric motor activated when turning the steering wheel in either direction.

The water pump is driven by the belt that you see externally.

I covered the differences when I installed AC in my non-AC car. There is a recent thread about it. I drove with the compressor in place for a few weeks before finishing the install. I saw zero drop in mpgs over that time.

Btw, the components don't weigh much at all. Maybe 15 - 20 lbs tops

Thanks, Mark. That changes things if it's only a question of 15-20 lbs. I was under the impression it was about 30 lbs.

Really appreciate the detailed procedure for A/C installation whoever posted that.
