Default LED Headlight Bulbs?

I've seen LED bulbs being sold on Ebay that are H4/9003 and would therefore fit the socket for our headlamps.

Would it be possible to use these, or is that a ridiculous notion because no LEDs put out enough light to drive safely?

Here are a couple of examples:
1. HID Xenon White 68-SMD 9003 LED Replacement Light Bulbs: eBay Motors (item 330450246508 end time Sep-08-10 08:44:38 PDT)

2. 2x Car Fog Lights H4 18 SMD 5050 12V White - eBay (item 260649924749 end time Sep-11-10 11:03:05 PDT)

Otherwise, what HID kits have been used successfully, and what percentage of power savings would be seen over a regular bulb?

Thanks!

Go for it if you think your parking lights provide enough light to drive by.

From what I have read the proper retrofit is a custom job costing many hundreds of dollars. I don't believe there is any plug and play.

Aren't HID and LED two different technologies? The first link looks like it is for LED bulbs designed to replace HID bulbs in an enclosure designed for HID's????

I see new Audis with what look like multiple LED lights, so perhaps LED's give adequate light if you use a number of them???

I just found this:

Wow, interesting!

I am trying to find a source that can give a proper light output rating or test between the two, but have not had any luck so far. Please post back if anyone finds info! I will.

Lumens (lm) are the unit of luminosity, which is a measure of how much light exits the lamp. lm/W = luminous efficacy, or how efficiently light is produced. If an LED lamp does not include a lm and a W rating, don't buy it. It's as simple as that.

Again I refer you to: Luminous efficacy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and remind you that you need about 1000lm for an automotive lighting application (and that 1000lm must be pointed in the right direction. DOT approval would be a good sign that it is), so you'd need about 20W of LED or 10W of high-pressure sodium to accomplish that. Though I don't think HID scales down that well.

What do you mean by high-pressure sodium?
