Default Any ideas for a center console?

The first thing I noticed when I got into the insight is no center console. I literally fell over when I sat down and was about to shift into drive. I just got so used to the 09 corolla. I like to rest my right arm on the center console, while I use my left arm to steer. Any ideas?

Oops I ment to put this into the 2nd gen, Mods could you please move this. Sorry.

FYI, click the yellow report post button that shows up on the bottom left side of the first post in the thread and post that you want it moved and they will take care of it quicker, rather than the post sliding by if they don't read it right away.

I just bought a 2000 and keep leaning over too. Got used to having an arm rest. If you find a solution please let me know. Thanks

PADDED & UPHOLSTERED CENTER ARMREST STORAGE CONSOLE - JCWhitney

$41, I got mine on sale for less.

There is another one on the net for about twice this price.

M. Sirach reviews the Armrest King Insight Armrest for CleanMPG - CleanMPG Forums
$96?

Husko made one, but they went out of business.

I've had both armrests listed in this thread. The JC Whitney has twice the storage value at less than half the price. That's the one I have in my current 2001 Insight. I trimmed the brackets down a few inches to install it level to the factory door armrest.

Both install very easily with just a screw driver. However, a small pilot hole helps to start the screw tip easier.

I have had the Armrest King for less than two years and I cannot recommend it:
-top lid's hinge broke
-overall flimsy feel
-top cover developed numerous stress crack in the vinyl
-small capacity for storage

I very much like the shape and design of it though. Just wishing for better quality construction and a bit larger size.

I went to the wrecker and got a fairly narrow armrest in about the right colour out of some GM thing, carved a 2x4 with a layer of 1/2" plywood on one side to make it wedge tight into the consol hole and screwed it onto the bottom of the GM armrest.
If you shape the wood nicely, it will stay tightly wedged into the consol.
Cost - about $5
It even has a nice flip-forward cupholder.

I purchased the JC Whitney model shown in previous posts. As warned by previous owners, the flimsy plastic hinge broke in the first month. I replaced it with metal hinges and haven't had any other problems. Good storage space, fits right over the center console and looks fine.

I bought a white pine kitchen knife holder and cut it to fit with a nice cubbyhole in the center.

Jim, Could you show a pic of this? I don't understand what you have done.
Thanks, -pete
